A day of rapine and rampage.
Don’t forget the mead!
Tell that to SpongeBob.
But anyway, I found something quite remarkable. I mean we all know this, but in this time I find it particularly important to remember that Catholic Spain defeated the Muslims. It may have taken 700 years of struggle, but they did it. I just hope we are made of similar stuff. We may not make it ourselves, but the Church will go on.
Here's another reading which I added later to the blog post: The Catholic Spirit of Christopher Columbus. Enjoy!

I got goose bumps just thinking about how those men sang the Salve Regina in the middle of the night. I mean we take for granted that if you get in a boat and sail west you will reach land. What faith they must have had. I can only imagine the excitement. Must have been about the same as when we landed on the moon.
Also how appropriate that God would guide and man named Christopher to discover the new world. The bearer of Christ, patron saint of travelers. I know poor old St. Christopher has been downgraded in recent times. But I still count on him.
Funny what you DON"T learn in school: Santa Maria de la Inmaculada Concepción (Holy Mary of the Immaculate Conception).
He was a Third Order Franciscan.
The Orient could have been Catholic. Wow. what a different world we might have had. But apparently God wanted the Americas more.
The gold was for taking out the Muslims and retaking Jerusalem. Never heard that in public school. We could well have been born in a Muslim country instead of a Christian. Maybe that is what Obama was trying to say when he said this was a Muslim country. Maybe he knew it could have been?
What a great article. Thanks for posting it. I never really knew much about Christopher Columbus or Cristobal Colon as he was more accurately known as.
Or “Cristóforo Colombo” his name in Italian. Remember, he was from Genoa.
Peace to you,
~Theo
Cool now I know how we got to Columbus.
Just an simple alternative to the absurd "indigenous People's" Day?
Wait.
We already have that.
Never mind.
I'm celebrating on Oct 12
So just go celebrate Goundhog day.
Then piss off!
