Victoria Osteen Chides Critics: Chides Critics: I Didn't Mean Parishioners Shouldn't Worship God ...
Christian Post ^ | 09/06/2014 | Leonardo Blair

After weathering a blistering week of scorn and ridicule for controversial comments she made during a worship service at the popular Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas, including a declaration that worship is not for God, co-pastor Victoria Osteen now says that's not what she meant and dismissed the notion as "ridiculous."

"While I admit that I could have been more articulate in my remarks, I stand by my point that when we worship God and are obedient to Him we will be better for it," she told The Blaze in a statement Friday. "I did not mean to imply that we don't worship God; that's ridiculous, and only the critics and cynics are interpreting my remarks that way."

She further explained that her congregants at Lakewood Church knew exactly what she meant and there was no confusion among the flock she co-pastors with her New York Times bestselling author husband Joel Osteen.

"Every Lakewood member knows what I was talking about because they have experienced firsthand the joy and victory of a Lakewood Church worship service, and the honor, reverence and gratitude we show God," she said.

In the last week, Osteen sparked a firestorm of withering criticism after a 36-second clip of her controversial comments on worship and adoration for God went viral.

"I just want to encourage every one of us to realize when we obey God, we're not doing it for God—I mean, that's one way to look at it—we're doing it for ourselves, because God takes pleasure when we're happy," she said in the 36-second clip posted on YouTube, with her husband smiling at her side. "That's the thing that gives Him the greatest joy …"

"So, I want you to know this morning: Just do good for your own self. Do good because God wants you to be happy," she continued. "When you come to church, when you worship Him, you're not doing it for God really. You're doing it for yourself, because that's what makes God happy. Amen?" the clip ended as congregants cheered.

"I did not mean to imply that we don't worship God; that's ridiculous, and only the critics and cynics are interpreting my remarks that way."

I don't recall that anyone claimed she didn't say to not worship God.

What her problem was is stating WHY we are worshiping God.

We aren't worshiping Him because it makes us feel good or that it's good for us.

We worship God because He is worthy of worship and it's His due.

So she never apologized for or retracted her comments. She basically blame-shifted the responsibility for *misunderstanding* what she said on to everyone else.

"The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day."330

Sola Scriptura in action. Sad.

The Osteen’s antics have nothing to do with sticking to the Bible but everything about man making things up and doing what feels good.

By the way, when you guys decided Limbo didn’t exist what happened to those who died in original sin but didn’t “deserve” Hell? I hope they weren’t left floating out near Jupiter or something.

Eventually you get Joseph Smith or L. Ron Hubbard, since we can all make up whatever we want, choose whatever “Holy Books” we believe in and cut out those parts that trouble us. Islam started that way.

Smith created “man made traditions.”

L. Ron Hubbard created “man made traditions.”

Mohamad created “man made traditions.”

Anyone else noticing a trend?

You show a profound ignorance of what the Church teaches.

Perhaps after you study the subject enough to ask a cogent question, you can expect an answer.

Are you claiming that Catholics have never believed that those who die in original sin would be sent to “the edge of Hell?”

You never responded to my comment at post 24. Would you try (without posting your silly little pictures)? If you can’t do that then please just tell me if you believe your man made traditions trump God’s Word and whether or not Jesus’ Grace is sufficient for our salvation.

You still show a profound ignorance of what the Church teaches.

Perhaps after you study the subject enough to ask a cogent question, you can expect an answer.

Here is the answer to your questions - http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/_INDEX.HTM

Have fun, maybe if you can keep an open mind, you will learn something. With God’s Grace you might even find Salvation.

You won’t simply give a straight answer. Your responses remind me of Bill Clinton when asked about his peculiar activities with a chubby intern.

Do you hold man made traditions superior to Scripture?

It’s an easy question. You don’t have to post hotlinks or lame pictures. A simple “yes” or “no” will suffice.

Again you show no understanding of what a Catholic believes. When you can ask a cogent question, come on back. Until then, vale`!

Well, to be honest, nobody ever expects a straight answer out of a Catholic.

All we ever get are deflections, rabbit trails, links to sites so we can look it up ourselves.

No Catholic will ever commit to a straight up answer to a simple question.

Just like Osteen you don’t seem capable of simply stating Jesus is sufficient for salvation. You don’t need man-made traditions nor “coredemtrixes.”

Deny Him now and He’ll deny you before the Throne.

It’s sad when someone can’t answer one simple question about their faith. That tells me their faith is far too complicated.

One of the reasons for the beauty of having faith in Jesus is the simplicity. All you really have to do is believe on Him.

Catholicism plays both sides against the middle.

Somewhere, sometime, someone has taken every conceivable position on something that Catholics have to address.

So what ends up happening is that Catholic A makes a statement about what Catholics believe.

Then some non-Catholics quotes Catholic A and Catholic B comes along and tells him he’s flat out wrong, a Catholic hater, a heretic, slandering the church, yada, yada, yada.

I’ve actually seen Catholic take positions on issues with nary a peep from fellow Catholics but when non-Catholics point out the exact same doctrine, they’re shredded, poorly catechized, *haters*, heretics, etc.

You just have to figure out where the individual FRoman Catholic stands, and the only way to not be shredded is to agree with that individuals position on Catholicism, whether it agrees with the CCC or not.

Ultimately, no matter what a non-Catholic says, even if it can be backed up by the CCC, they’re going to be accused of being wrong.

I just saw his “fractal” pic on another thread. I’ve heard some amazing testimonies from believers that moved me.

The poster’s pic isn’t much of a testimony but it seems appropriate to his belief system.
