Therein lays the problem for amillenarians and many others who misunderstand what scripture teaches. Spiritualizing is a tool used by many to make scripture fit their preconceived beliefs.
We see this in a lot of different areas. As the state empowered institutional church emerged we saw salvation become the tool of the institutional church to keep it's members in line. Today we see acceptance of homosexuality as "healthy, happy, and normal" and some liberal churches have started "marrying" homosexuals. If Christians were constrained by the literal first interpretation of Scripture neither of those things would have happened.
We see our conservative Reformed Brothers fighting this trend of liberalism, but I don't think they realize how amillennialism is the camel's nose in the tent.
