The ambiance and the experience and the demeanor of the laity -- mostly subjective things -- have changed to give the appearance of a protestant service. Along with the inclusion of female laity on the holy side of the altar rail (if it exists) and
versus populum.
This is most apparent to an old-time Catholic who attends an NO Mass for the first time. Almost invariably, a comment about protestant character follows.
Note I have not included description of any of the abuses which are so prevalent.
