Associated Press has issued an apology for its errant reporting regarding claims of a mass grave for children of unwed mothers on the grounds of Tuam Home, an Irish home for unwed mothers.
Since the disturbing story broke early this month regarding the Tuam Home for unwed mothers in Ireland, where 796 babies were purportedly “dumped into a septic tank”, the Patheos bloggers have been on the case.

Amen!
That is a beautiful sentence! Seriously, something to think about and pray about every day.
Really?!? I’ll have to look for that next time I pull the Silver Bullet out of the garage. I don’t know that it even has a gas tank icon on the dash; never thought to look. It does have a “STOP LAMP” light that’s telling me one of the brake lights is a little dubious; I need to talk to my classic-car friend.
I’ll look for a gas-tank finder in the van, too ... getting drifty as I near fifty; sometimes I lose the tank on that!
Like I predicted in other threads and in this one, nothing will pacify the blood lust for some on FR. Joining with liberal websites the FR Catholic bashers still full steam ahead in their hoping and praying that Catholic nuns are the children of satan. Let me say this. Pathetic and sad, but such is life when hatred of the Catholic Church is your reason for living.
“Ohh, you have a nice ribbon there!
Congratulations!”
Thank you! I knew you really wanted it back, you didn’t know I was watching when you threw it away.
Tank you very much.
Oh, you made a pun!
1. Only "some" children who died were baptized (but not all). How many? No one knows yet. How many that were put into the mass grave? We don't know yet.
2. That children born to unwed mothers were denied baptism because it was "church" teaching is clarified that it wasn't "church" teaching to deny baptism even though they don't know if some were still denied it anyway in practice.
3. The part of the story that dead children's bodies were placed in a used septic tank hasn't yet determined if it WAS a septic tank and won't be known unless and until an excavation is done. Yet, we do know that blueprints of the property show a "septic tank" in the same spot. Let's not forget many Catholics here accepted that it was a septic tank "re-purposed" for a burial vault. What is so volatile about this?
4. Until, or unless, there is an excavation, no one knows how many of the 796 children and babies who died there were buried in this structure. That eye witnesses say they SAW small skeletal remains in there when the lid was moved, hasn't changed and their testimony has not been recanted. That there were no burial records for nearly 800 children who died at that home was what prompted the whole story in the first place.
5. Finally, the year the home was opened was off a year in the AP report. Is that a HUGE deal?
Good summation of the apology. Thanks!
If only those who claimed the Tuam home is a yet another damning disclosure of a Church-run institution in Ireland had waited until the facts were known.
How come the freeper freeloaders are not complaining about this being an excerpt.
ROTFL
“No confirmed facts to the story at all”.
Just liberal Catholic media joined by FR Catholic bashers. Hatred for the Church sure brings out strange bed fellows.
You were one of the main instigators perpetuating this story, and your comments were full of snide innuendo about the Catholic Church. In fact, I don’t recall many statements from you about waiting for the facts to come out before judging the situation. Therefore, it is very disingenuous of you now to claim that was your position.
No, I merely posted a story I read online that alarmed me. There is nothing I feel I should apologize for and "snide innuendo" is in the eye of the beholder, I would say. How long did it take for the vigilante Catholics to divert the the thread I did post to all the bad things "Protestant" ministries did in Ireland? The old "other people did it too" defense seems to drip off their lips like Pavlov's dog at the sound of a bell.
What I would call disingenuous is when people IGNORE statements that butt up against their ranting accusations and then expect everyone to not discuss a shameful possibility of children being mistreated in a "church" sponsored institution as if nothing like that -or worse - has EVER happened before! You seem to keep forgetting that there has been a precedent for bad behavior by clergy within the Catholic church - behavior that was known about and those who could and should have done something about it looked the other way. That is why the OP I posted said concerning this subject:
Do you expect the world to ignore all those previous revelations of abuse and neglect already known about?
This is the last time I am going to repeat myself on this, I HOPE the accusations are proved false. NOT because I think the Catholic church shouldn't take responsibility for the actions done in her name, but because it smears ALL pro-life Christians and fuels the fires of condemnation coming from abortion proponents who insist we don't care about babies and children after they are born. THAT'S my position and it hasn't changed.
I asked, and continue to ask: where are the 796 missing children buried at?
That is what most people want to know. That's all.
What is the problem with that?
1.) Debunking the septic tank story does not mean that all the 796 missing children have been found.
2.) Having a memorial site for the dead 796 Tuam children to the Tuam registry office does not mean that every one of those 796 missing children has been found.
3.) The Bon Secours sisters providing death records for the 796 children at the St. Mary's Home (the place they ran) to the Tuam registry office does not mean that the 796 children have been found.
Where are the BURIAL records - the burial locations: The RCC and/or the Bon Secour’s sisters need to provide this.
Whilst it is good and right that uncorroborated further feasting by various ill-informed press outlets on the appalling and verified abuses perpetrated by the Catholic church’s minions is being challenged and taken to task, this does not detract from the continuing lack of bringing to account, scrutiny and punishment of those who inflicted misery on the hundreds and thousands across the country and really only documented only from the 40s.
Our sainted and scholarly land remains in unresolved turmoil pending the Executive finally taking its testicles in its hand to bring the abusers to account.
From what you have posted, I presume you are writing from Ireland. While I cannot speak for the situation overseas, I can point out that here in the US, No Catholic will ever defend the indefensible. Most of the sex abuse that took place dates back to the 50's and earlier, long before JPII. I would ask you, however, what is being done in non-Catholic communities to stop predatory sex abuse of children? This is not limited to the Catholic Church.
Sex Abuse of Children by Protestant Clergy.
The Catholic Church here, through its bishops in the USCCB, have implemented a program to prevent future occurrences. This includes all members of the community who come in contact with children, from janitors in the schools to volunteers who teach children at the parish level. We all are subjected to fingerprinting and a police background check. We are also required to attend classes on how to identify sexual predators and what actions to take. This is possible because of the centralized nature of the Catholic Church. It is also the reason why the media have been able to focus a laser beam on us. This is not possible in the non-Catholic denominations where there is no one to take responsibility.
Report: Protestant Church Insurers Handle 260 Sex Abuse Cases a Year
Worse still, is the sex abuse of children in the education system.
WHEN BOYS ARE MOLESTED BY TEACHERS AND OTHERS IN POSITIONS OF AUTHORITY
And then there are the camp counselors, Big Brothers of America and the list goes on and on. There is plenty of guilt to go around. The Catholic Church is an easy target because of a central source. To obtain records of sexual abuse by rabbis, imams and protestant ministers entails a painstaking process. Educators and camp counselors are protected by unions.
God bless!
