cdc, when I hear people say they are “spiritual” but aren’t interested in being “religious” or in having faith, I wonder if they have some pet sin or sins they don’t want to give up. I wonder if they want to stay in vague generalities and not have any specific demands made upon them.

I’m in the same boat with you, wondering just what they mean, but it’s rare these days that I’m curious enough to ask. I think a lot of them believe that it makes them sound less shallow. It doesn’t.

It could be a vague feeling that there is a “higher power”, but they are of the “mommy made me sit on the uncomfortable pew in the uncomfortable clothes so I’m going to rebel against ‘organized religion’” type. Another possibility is that they abhor sounding “judgmental”. There’s also the desire to be unique or exotic. I don’t know. The answers are usually pretty tedious.

Isaiah 5:20 New Century Version (NCV)

20 How terrible it will be for people who call good things bad and bad things good,

who think darkness is light and light is darkness,

who think sour is sweet and sweet is sour.

I’ll be happy to answer you from my perspective, if you’re really interested.
