Atheist Group Sets Up 'Jesus Is a Myth' Banner in Response to Easter Display at Wisconsin Capitol

An atheist group is combatting a Christian Easter display at Wisconsin's Capitol building in Madison by setting up a sign that reads "Nobody died for our 'sins,' Jesus Christ is a myth."

The Freedom From Religion Foundation says it rushed to get a permit for their display after seeing that the Concerned Women for America group was able to set up their own display at Wisconsin's Capitol building. The CWA group's display reportedly included a Christian cross and pro-life literature. The conservative women's group says on its website that it's dedicated to bringing "biblical principles into all levels of public policy."

Annie Laurie Gaylor, president of the FFRF, said in a statement that she finds it "unfortunate" to see a cross displayed in front of a capitol building.

"It's unfortunate to see a sectarian symbol that is increasingly used as a symbol of political intimidation in our state capitol," Gaylor said. "It's also unfortunate to see women serving as a front for a patriarchal religion based on women's subservience and second-class status. This is the same group that helped defeat the Equal Rights Amendment citing its allegiance to biblical principles, instead of civil liberties under our secular government."

Faith and Freedom Coalition Chairman Ralph Reed told Fox News that he believes in free speech rights, even though he finds the sign to be "repugnant" and showing "contempt" toward the Christian religion.

"I would certainly hope that people would show more respect for and deference on this most high and holy week … but unfortunately, we crossed that line a long time ago," said Reed, whose nonprofit group seeks to establish conservative principles such as small government and a pro-life culture.

The Wisconsin Capitol building in Madison has long been a site for display battles between atheists and Christians, especially during the holiday season. Over the past few years, the Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation has put up both an "winter solstice message" and a "natural nativity display" at the capitol building, alongside other displays such as the traditional Christmas tree and the less-traditional Festivus pole.

atheists only discredit themselves with this nonsense. WITHOUT RELIGION, there are too many NON-religious references in that time period to deny the existence of the participants. (ie pontus pilot (sp) did reference a crucifiction in roman records, apostles are recorded traveling in what is now modern Greece and Rome)

Next the commies will be saying G. Washington was a myth.

Free speech. If one does it, another can. Capitol grounds should be a neutral zone. Plant flowers instead.

Frankly, (and I say this as a devout Christian) I don’t understand the need to set up displays on public property that are bound to draw dissent.

Christianity is better off when government stays out of our business, so why poke the bear?

The focused energy they spend on that which they do not believe to exist is truly both sad and LAUGHABLE!

I would love to put up a sign right next to them that says...

"Atheisism was born from the desire to sin without consequence."

Why do they attack God so?

It’s almost like a religion to them.

I remember the day Curtis Lowe resigned from du and came to Free Republic. Was a Praise God moment.

Exactly. And a bit odd. They shouldn't care but they do.

It is as if they have some kind of resentment and vendetta towards religion. Maybe they were hurt and angry and ... he is spiteful wishes to get even with his ex-wife over the mother bringing up their child as a Christian.

This happened to that well known atheist in CA. Forget the father's name. But that was his real motivation.

Evangelical Atheism.

Next thing you know they’ll be renting out baseball stadiums for “Come to Nothing” revival crusades and asking people to come forward and surrender their hearts to.... Nothing.

I’m sure someone will condemn me for being judgmental, but:

These people are going to Hell.

And when they’re alive I refer to atheists as “walking piles of hot compost temporarily composed of living protoplasm randomly assembled by meaningless interactions of a blind & mindless cosmos for no discernable or rational purpose.”

Harsh? So who wrote “Earth Without People”?

I'd add that “atheism offers only a cold-hearted, hopeless, and soulless, and depressing, prospect for all of humanity.”

Jesus was written about in the four gospels plus Paul’s letters plus Hebrews, James, Jude, etc., all of which were circulated at a time when they could have been refuted by people who were actually there. They were also circulated widely and to a general audience. We literally have nothing like this for any other figure from the ancient world.

I like the references to Josephus and Tacitus because Josephus is clearly anti-Christian, but Christians can’t let the atheists exclude scriptures as historical documents in the debate. It’s like us fighting with all our best players sitting on the bench while we bring in the third-string walk-ons and a few guys who were sitting in the crowd.

Agreed, but we must also be able to provide independent verification in order to catch the secular eye. Since athiests deny the gospels outright, using them is a circular argument from their perspective. Having Josephus and Tacitus write about an insignificant person in an obscure region of the Roman empire is a game-changer and should be our go-to response when they spout their inanity.
