Party Pooper!
Actually, excellent comment covering a lot of ground.
Thank you very much. In the interests of brevity, I didn’t mention anything about Cardinal Suenens of Belgium. He was mentioned in the link provided by NYer.
The cardinal tried to bum-rush sainthood for John XXIII once upon a time, according to the article. This is the first I’d heard of this attempt, and I still do not know when that happened. Logic would shade towards just after John’s death.
Cardinal Suenens has a very, very sorry record. You can do your own research as well as I, but one of the things I noted is that he was one of the prelates responsible for initiating receiving Holy Communion in the hand.
This has been rejected by ALL the Popes up til Francis. Francis may or may not be on board with this discipline of no communion in the hand. I don’t know. If you ever watch Mass at the Vatican, or wherever the Pope at that time may say a televised Mass, you will see communicants ONLY receiving on the tongue.
Also to Cardinal Suenens, and important to note. I don’t have a link to the following statement, but it is fairly common knowledge that weekly Mass participation in Belgium is now about 5% or less. When Suenens became Cardinal, it was over 90%.
He was a leading voice (according to WIKI) at VC 2, and died in 1996.
