The South's Stunning Embrace of Gay Marriage

[SNIP]

First, it is difficult to overstate the effect of the generation gap. A decade ago, when most of these same-sex marriage bans were passed across the South, the vast majority of today’s Millennials were neither counted in public-opinion surveys of adults nor eligible to vote. Their attitudes strongly diverge from their parents and grandparents. Nationwide, nearly seven in 10 (69 percent) Americans ages 18 to 33 favor same-sex marriage, compared to just 37 percent of Americans ages 68 and older. This generation gap is evident in virtually every subgroup in America, including among southerners. Today, nearly two thirds of southern Millennials (65 percent) support same-sex marriage, compared to just 28 percent of southerners in the Silent Generation.

Second, and perhaps not surprisingly given the value southerners place on hospitality, there is a growing “friends and family effect” at work in southerners’ changing attitudes. Despite the generally conservative cultural climate, more gay and lesbian southerners are coming out to those who are close to them. Nearly two thirds of southerners (64 percent) today say they have a close friend or family member who is gay or lesbian, a factor that strongly influences support for same-sex marriage. Within that group, 56 percent favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry legally; among southerners with no gay or lesbian close friends or family members, only 32 percent favor same-sex marriage.

[SNIP]

Finally, there is some evidence in the recent survey that southerners may be rediscovering a value that is part of the historical DNA of groups such as Southern Baptists: the separation of church and state. Southerners are drawing a distinction between personal moral objections to same-gender sexual relationships and support for public policy that would legally recognize same-sex marriage.

Public opinion may be changing on this issue, but, have yet to see any southern state pass a law allowing homosexual marriage.

The south will embrace it when the U.S. Supreme Court imposes it on all of us.

It’s coming, because since last year’s homosexual marriage court cases, a number of federal courts have overturned state definitions of marriage. And there are more in the pipeline, so it’s inevitable that the Supreme Court will take up the issue of homosexual marriage again. Perhaps in the next couple of years.

Then, the court will be asked to decide a key issue which they side stepped last year : Is there a federal constitutional right to homosexual marriage, yes or no.

It’s true that a few liberal states have passed same sex marriage laws, but no southern state as of now is even considering introducing legislation on the subject. It may be imposed by a court, but, hard to say that the south has embraced homosexual marriage.

Have any states legalized gay marriage by popular referendum?

Around 10 years ago I saw a copy of “Mother Jones” magazine. I just browsed it for a few minutes and was shocked. It went beyond what most Nazis or Marxists would allow.

If I recall correctly, Maine and Maryland had referendums on the subject, and voters in those states voted to allow same-sex marriage. Minnesota voters rejected an amendment which would have defined marriage as a man and a woman. Soon after that, the Minnesota legislature passed a law allowing homosexual marriage.

"The number of gay azz teens walking around the mall today seem disproportionate....or not.."

From the article: nearly seven in 10 (69 percent).

Dallas, probably 98% active homosexuals. Austin, even higher percentage. (just joking, maybe)

We’re in limbo here in Michigan waiting for a royal decree.

A spiritual awakening is clearly needed across America. Yet I do not think the celebration of homosexuality is as deep as the media likes to purport.

"Southerners are drawing a distinction between personal moral objections to same-gender sexual relationships and support for public policy that would legally recognize same-sex marriage."

"Personally opposed, but..." Where have we heard that before?

Whoever would have believed that the late Ted Kennedy and the late Mario Cuomo would be reincarnated as Southern Christians?

It would indeed be ironic if the Hispanic vote saved us from our own stupidity as a nation. They may be one of the last groups in America who still hold onto their religious beliefs. We can only hope it holds up ... white millennials are most likely a lost cause ... the drip drip drip of progressive nonsense has taken hold. Our entire educational system was compromised by old guard communists starting in the 50s, and has been one of their primary continuing goals ever since. Joe McCarthy was one of the most wrongly maligned men in our history ... somewhere in heaven he is saying “I told you so”!

Hate the sin, love the sinner

although when I run into some local well known who has defined themselves that way, it is all I can do not to think of that first, second and last

Sheesh I don’t broadcast about sex life or even think anyone would be remotely interested why would they think I gave a flying flip about theirs?

"...one thing I refuse to believe is that kids try homosexuality as an experiment. if you’re straight, it’s a disgusting thought."

I guess this can't be settled by anecdote vs anecdote, but I personally am convinced that kids--- boys and girls--- DO experiment with homosexuality. For different reasons, possibly.

Girls are prone to intensely emotional friendships with other girls (you can read about it in 18th and 19th century novels, memoirs and letters.) This isn't sexual, but it can be tipped into sexuality by the cultural milieu, which is now thoroughly decayed. --- but many of them can and will transition into heterosexual behavior with men. Or go back and forth.

Boys' mental wiring is imprinted by early sexual experiences. They pattern on the sensations of arousal and orgasm. If they get seduced while drunk, fondled or raped by an older man, they are much more likely to later behave as gay. Their impulses--- sexual reflexes, so to speak --- are all messed up. They may still think it's disgusting, but that's how their bodies will react.

My 2 cents worth. Anecdotes available at no extra cost.

Nothing good is going to come out of homosexual marriage and our cultural embrace of the homosexual agenda. Our children will pay the price of this pied piper.

Unfortunately, the homos have ‘gentrified’ many of the larger cities in the South. Atanta has a big community and it’s been that way for years.

Sadly, I agree with that. I feel terrible for my daughter and the children of those that love USA, but why should I care if a bunch of homos and fag hags are handed a country of debt, illegals, and Muslims?
