German Bishops Tell Vatican: Catholics Reject Sex Rules

Germany’s Catholic bishops, responding to a worldwide Vatican survey, said on Monday that many Church teachings on sexual morality were either unknown to the faithful there or rejected as unrealistic and heartless.

They said the survey, drawn up for a synod on possible reforms in October, showed most German Catholics disputed Church bans on birth control and premarital or gay sex and criticized rules barring the divorced from remarriage in church.

The results will not be news to many Catholics, especially in affluent Western countries, but the blunt official admission of this wide gap between policy and practice is uncommon and bound to raise pressure on Pope Francis to introduce reforms.

Bishops in Germany, one of the richest and most influential national churches in the 1.2-billion-strong Catholic world, have been pressing the Vatican to reform, especially over divorce.

LOL, Dr. of theology Luther has to always be mentioned when things are arwry in Roman Catholicism:)

Maybe the German Catholics are staying because the Protestant churches won’t have them. There an assertion for an assertion.

Bishops are supposed to teach their flocks not take public opinion polls in the pews. These results are quite sad.

A majority of an entire nation of Catholics with a whimsical view of morality? How did that happen?

bound to raise pressure on Pope Francis to introduce reforms.

...or to reignite teaching efforts.

Why do seculars always assume the Catholics, or any other church, should change doctrines to fit society's views, when what matters are God's views?

(An) Answer: the seculars believe God was created in their image, and doesn't really exist except as a concept.

There will be no reforms. The survey was taken to find out how clergy is handling these issues.

“A majority of an entire nation of Catholics with a whimsical view of morality”.

You mean sort of like protestants, who go their merry way, believing whatever they feel like believing, and most never going in the front door of a church. The devil has been winning for years.......in all forms of Christianity.

I think it is more illustrate of what is going on in Germany.
I suspect a similar poll would give the same results taken among the State church.

I would also expect that a poll taken among the Free Church members, and among daily mass goers and older liturgy folks, would show a higher dedication to the Christian mores.

Correct I believe.

Many self identify as “Catholic” or “Lutheran” without any understanding of what they believe.
