An area woman was denied Communion at her mothers funeral last month after a priest new to her parish learned she was in a same-sex relationship.
Carol Parker and her partner of nearly 20 years, Josie Martin, live in the small town of Chula, Mo., and had been attending St. Columban Catholic Church in Chillicothe, Mo., for 12 years when Ms. Parkers mother passed away on Dec. 26. The obituary listed Ms. Parker as a surviving daughter and also mentioned her partner.
Later that week, Ms. Parker received a call from Father Benjamin Kneib, informing her that she and Ms. Martin would not be allowed to receive Communion at the Dec. 30 funeral.
It was a shock to hear him say that, Ms. Parker said. I never expected that, especially at my mothers funeral.
She added that at the funeral, most in attendance chose not to take Communion out of respect for her and Ms. Martin. Despite this show of solidarity, the women no longer feel welcome at the church and have begun visiting another an hour from their home.
That was our faith community. It really took away a lot of things for us, Ms. Parker said. He (Father Kneib) would still like to see us there, but I dont feel like Im welcome if I cant take part in the main focus of the Mass.

Testing for a lawsuit? To the left gays trump God.
Taking down religion would suit the communists just fine.
Ummm, so? Maybe she should start attending an Unitarian church.
You know, they won’t be happy, ever. They do want to push this and get the government involved, just like they did to those bakers who refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian wedding. The judge says they HAD to. The New Mexican state supreme court said they HAD to.
At some point some judge will say the priest HAS to.
Thank you. This needs go be said day and night. Priest’s who give communion out like this are enabling judgement upon those who receive it.
I applaud when rules are enforced. So rare these days. The last priest refusing communion to a lesbian was rebuked by his bishop.
I'm not sure what a formal confession entails but I do believe that people's consciences work differently and many are harder on themselves than others are. For them, even private confession can be distressful, nerve-wracking.
Most Protestant religions don't have confessionals yet I've known many non-Catholics in my life and they are just as good folks as most Catholics, some better. My Dad included.
Just as an aside, how many, unknowingly, have confessed sins to a priest who was later found to have been abusing children? And does the average Catholic commit that despicable sin, or worse? I tend to think not.
Yet somehow, I don’t think a Mohammedan imam will ever HAVE to.
Exactly. However, the libs do. Their worldview dictates than man is “born good” but corrupted by society. That’s why they have this drive to tear down the society that exists and rebuilt into “utopia” from the ground up. Of course, that never works despite their numerous failed attempts to do so because of the original sin they deny.
Right on! Some rules, though, are solidly based, IMO, but some need to be reexamined. Maybe there are too many "cafeteria" Catholics but some of their issues deserve to be addressed. There are a lot more educated people in the world than years ago and they have a God-given right to use their minds to come to logical conclusions.
you cannot completely ignore the rules, regulations, teachings,proclamatyions...whatever, of any organization, and they wonder why they question your sincerity....Mom may have been a sincere Catholic, but if you and your girlfriend are living a homosexual lifestyle.....attend the funeral for sure, but don't defame your mother's memory by insulting her religion......just pay your respects and get out...QUICK
The personal holiness or lack thereof is not the important issue in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, because you're not confessing to the priest as a man; he is acting in persona Christi, as Jesus. So whether he's a good guy or a holy saint or a child molester is irrelevant (though you might be surprised to learn how few priests are child-abusers compared to teachers and to Protestant clergy, contrary to what the hate-filled news media would have us believe).
Pagans don’t get to receive communion. What a surprise.
My pastor says if that happens, he’ll stop doing marriages at all.
Also...
"Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me." (Romans 7:20)...ipso facto,if I do whatever I would (regarding sin)then it still is me that does it!The point being,I'm still walking hand in hand with that carnal mind..."For to be carnally minded is death" (Romans 8:6)
and...
"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind..." (Romans 12:2)
Too many seem to believe it's the church that should be transformed to the way they think. That it's the church that should conform to this world.
The "god of this world" keeps pushing.Wether it's an attempt to crush the church or just to more easily identify his targets it matters little. However, pity those who are his instruments in the attempts.
Pray she realizes just how much of a favour the priest did her!
We rarely get threads on the RF where those who profess Jesus Christ are pretty much "all of one mind"...and we know who doesn't like that don't we?
Faithful Catholics must be compelled to ask: how in the world can this Catholic woman harbor such nonsensical ideas about the legitimacy and spiritual correctness of homosexual behavior?
Hasnt she been paying any attention to what the bishops and the priests have been teaching us about the sin of homosexual behavior for the past 50 years?
Oh, thats right, I forgot; the bishops and priests of the Catholic Church havent said a word about that sin, or almost any other sin, for as long as most people can remember. And Im sorry, but I dont give them one ounce of credit for their bold opposition to same-sex marriages. That weak-kneed position on the sin of homosexual behavior has allowed the vast majority of practicing Catholics to actually believe that while homosexual marriages are verboten, so-called civil unions are just perfectly okay with the Catholic Church.
For the Modernist bishops and our Modernist pope, the Catholic faith is all about social justice, the mercy of God and the re-distribution of wealth. Sinful behavior and Catholic dogma have long been ignored or forgotten. For the vast majority of even practicing Catholics, this does not have a good ending. But God will demand an accounting of these bishops; and for those who have been given much responsibility, as have these bishops, much will be expected.
We must keep them in our every prayer that they turn the Church in the proper direction.
That's right. I always point out to my RCIA students that the Holy Eucharist is the only Sacrament which comes to us not only with a blessing but with an explicit curse.
I would argue that baptism also has a curse motif associated with it. The NT points to Noah through the flood, and Israel through the Red Sea as OT baptisms -- safe passage through the waters of judgement.
A discussion for another time.
Well, who ever told him that life as a priest would be easy?
I’ll be praying for Father Kneib.
