You asked if we should blame the church.
If the entire religion knew about it and failed to do something, then YES.
In the case of Catholicism, it sets the standards from the top down. The problems with liberal Catholics are so widespread that yes, the entire hierarchy is responsible.
This sort of thing with the liberal politicians has been going on for decades and the church STILL gave Kennedy a Catholic funeral. They have not even distanced themselves from the liberal politicians, much less reprimanded them, so yes, the entire denomination is culpable since the entire denomination is aware. None of it is being done in a closet.
