I do not agree that it is hard wired, and well-intentioned people who indulge this excuse are not helping sexually disordered people. The fact that gay people may believe or say they were born that way is no proof whatsoever, as most children go through a period of believing the opposite sex is "yucky", or of having a crush on a teacher or friend of the same sex while their hormonal systems are under development. When do-gooders get in there and start insisting that this phenomenon is a rock-solid proof of homosexual orientation and a permanent condition like racial physical features, they are blowing smoke and harming the person dealing with this question.
"Gay affirming" has become not only an epidemic, but the hysteria has extended to the courts, where they are seeking to criminalize any other possible explanation or solution, whether religious, sociological or scientific.
