“Did you know that clergy are the only people in the world that have no statute of limitations against filing a claim against them?”

I did not know that. I know the statute of limitations was extended and dropped completely for these cases in at least one state, and is being proposed in others though as a response to adults who came forward who for reasons that seem obvious did not come forward as children when the abuse was taking place. Whether or not someone may make allegations fraudulently isn’t an argument against having laws or codes of conduct.

As horrible as these crimes are removing the statute of limitations is worse. How can you defend yourself against crimes committed decades ago? Witnesses may have died, alibis are difficult to come by not matter how truthful, evidence is gone and do you really want to convict someone a personal recollection? Memories are the worst kind of evidence. This is a difficult situation in which justice might have to be meted out by God alone.
