“A married heterosexual clergy would put an end to most of this and help root out sodomy in the Church.”
The vast majority of priests are not homosexuals. They are good men who sacrifice to help others. I would expel the homosexuals first.
I don’t oppose married priests but that is not the immediate need. The immediate need is to get rid of the homosexual network that protects and promotes each other.
I think the all male environment coupled with the policy of mandatory priestlt celibacy helped create the environment for all of this to happen. It helped drive away heterosexual priests.
Further, the policy of mandatory priestly celibacy is relatively new in the history of the Church. The first 40 or so popes were married men. Until about the 12th Century the overwhelming majority of priests and bishops were married.
The policy of mandatory priestly celibacy was implemented in the Middle Ages largely to combant rampant corruption in the Church, specifically nepotism. At the time, the policy made some sense. But it is certainly no longer needed today. Mandatory priestly celibacy contributed to the pedophile priest scandal and it drives away heterosexual candidates for the priesthood. In the East, in countries like Ukraine, Catholic priests are allowed to marry. And of course priests in the Orthodox Churches are allowed to marry. I see no reason why American Catholic priests should not be allowed to marry.
A heterosexual married clergy would at the very least, prevent the clergy from becoming a safe haven for homosexual offenders.
