Is Phil Robertson a Modern Day John the Baptist?
A Soldier's Progress ^ | 12-19-13

Matthew 3:4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

Is Phil Robertson a Modern Day John the Baptist? Could he be a "voice of one crying in the wilderness", proclaiming "Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." (Mk 1:3)?

I do not know the exact role that God has called Brother Robertson too. All I know is that he is now preaching at the national level a message against sin and pointing the nation to Jesus.

While I don't think Mr. Robertson will have to worry about being decapitated, this article makes me think of something I've been concerned about for a while, i.e., basically today's homosexualists are like the Herod family who would like to do to those of us who do not agree with them what Herod Antipas & co. did to John the Baptist.

In his sermon yesterday, our pastor likened Phil Robertson to the biblical prophets. Too often the word "prophet" is misidentified as someone who foretells the future. In fact, a prophet can also be someone who God speaks through to spread His word. In this instance I believe Phil was acting as a prophet of God's word.

As the prophets of the Bible, he will be vilified and even persecuted by those who refuse to hear or believe the truth.

Just a man with convictions of faith.

He is what we all should be as far as standing firm on Biblical Truth - if Christians had done so from the git-go, we wouldn't be in the cesspool we inhabit today (unless all that Biblical stuff that says we're gonna be in a cesspool before He comes back to set things right).

A long beard does not a prophet make. I think we’re going a little overboard here.

From the ‘sidelines’ I think what’s missing from this discussions his role as the family patriarch. As you know he ‘offended’ gays and-can’t remember who else. He needs to expand his expertise to the role of women in the family. As I see it the feminists out here have a big problem with ANYONE being a patriarch. Whatever he would say is going to offend. I say bring it on.

I don’t recall John the Baptist having Phil Robertson’s income stream. And though Phil’s beard might be made of camel’s hair, I don’t think he’s living on locusts and wild honey!

Not now he’s not.. but at one time they were dirt poor.

God has blessed Phil’s life because he has been faithful.

I've been following this closely since it broke. I don't watch much TV at all, so had to catch up with my wife on Duck Dynasty. I saw a few episodes last night. They walk the talk. I viewed YouTube videos from 2010 where Phil paraphrases Romans 1 - and got the GLADD people screaming. The wonderful part is the Robertsons are a fixture in American culture now.

The move this weekend of inviting the Daily Mail to their church where he leads Bible Study was brilliant. No spin. Just the Word. I saw the story before turning in and said to myself: "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel."

I also read the first few chapters of Matthew yesterday motivated by the Christmas story... so interesting it's followed by John The Baptist then your post here... synchronicity... seeing the interconnecteness of spiritual things.

More will be revealed!

No.

He is mearly a man who knows what he believes, and why. Phil isn't afraid because he has a lot of resources to fall back on (so far, wait till the hate crime trials start), and doesn't need to keep the panty waisted pansies in A&E happy.

He chose to make a stand. I support him. He spoke the unspeakable in stating what gay sex is.

Phil is an honest, God fearing, man. He is not a saint, he is something different.

Upon reading Robertson’s comments I would have to say no. He was much less blunt than John the Baptist.

I wouldn’t be comparing the Duck Dynasty character to John the Baptist, because that’s actually quite demeaning to John the Baptist.

In Matthew 3, we see ...

1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”

3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight.’ “

And then in chapter 11 ... Jesus says ...

8 But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.

9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.

10 For this is he of whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.’

11 “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Well, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but unless Phil was born to a Jewish couple named Zachariah and Elizabeth, the angel Gabriel announced his birth to his mama, he preached in the wilderness wearing rough clothing, was beheaded by order of a Idumean ruler named Herod, than, naw, he ain't any kind of John the Baptist.

But if you're saying we should admire his stand for the Lord, and his bravery to take on all comers, then, yep, you're right.

I don't think Phil is a John the Baptist per say, but I do believe that anyone who is a Christian believes the way Phil does: God, Family, and Faith.

I see where Cracker Barrel is back behind the Ducks...wonder if their sales hit the bottom? Is that why they are behind Phil again? When money isn't in the pocketbook, people will do some funny things. I still won't go there, they didn't support the Ducks in the beginning, they don't need my support now....Just saying...

I don't believe I mentioned his beard. And, no, I don't believe we're going a little overboard here. The dictionary defines prophet as "an effective or leading spokesman for a cause, doctrine or group." Phil Robertson is...

I think we’re going a little overboard here.

I'm convinced that Phil Robertson is the Second Coming of Christ.
