According to Marinda's brother, Luke, who went on to become a LDS apostle, and to Clark Braden, Marinda's brother Eli led the mob because he believed Joseph Smith had committed sexual improprieties with Marinda. I don't believe he was accused of raping Marinda Johnson
Smith was a married man, older than Marinda. He was claiming to be a Prophet of God, and performing "sexual improprieties" with a young girl was seen as beyond the pale then (and now) and to many in that crowd punishment was called for.
Smith was a horndog.

I was addressing the issue of rape. Of the original journals contemporary to the time, and the later writings of those who were present, I don’t know of any that accuse Joseph Smith of raping Marinda Johnson.
