I agree with you insofar that Mary had an incomplete understanding of her Divine Son as expressed in Luke 2:50 (also Luke 2:19). I disagree that it would by “a type of sin”. Sin is willful and informed denial of the will of God; indecision is by definition not sinful.

I also think that the Marian adoption in John 19:26-27 is primarily an adoption by Mary, not of Mary. She is asked to adopt John first and through that she adopted the entire Catholic Church. The economic arrangement was indeed such that John was to take care of her for he “took her to his own”, but the language Jesus used was not limited to economic matters: it was establishing a true and complete mother-child relationship. This also shows that whatever doubts she had had were overcome at that point, for Christ directed her thoughts to the future of the Church.

Thanks for the response. I admit, this is the first time I had ever considered that interpretation. I generally place the statement of Christ on the Cross to have more force than the volition of Mary.

Perhaps Christ directed his mother to observe her Son, i.e. Him on the Cross, and then He directed the head of the Household, John, to take Mary as his mother.

Joh 19:25-30
(25) Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
(26) When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!
(27) Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
(28) After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
(29) Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
(30) When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
