He was probably thinking: What's good for Russia is good; what's bad for Russia is bad. Similarly, what's bad for Russia's competitors (EU, US, etc.) is good; what's good for Russia's competitors is bad.
The problem, as I see it, is the US is now devolving to the same calculus since
