Sees relativism in recent items on Opinion page August 21, 2013
To the editor:
Your Aug. 17 Opinion page was very informative especially your cartoon "I'll take that one, that one, and that one" and the letter to the editor, "Our leaders should treat women with respect" by Bobby Sieber.
Hopefully your readers paid attention to the truths in both items. If one reads closely one can see what Pope Benedict XV Emeritus described as "The dictatorship of relativism."
In his interview with Peter Seewald, Benedict is asked if "everything is to some extent negotiable?" He answers, "It is obvious that the concept of truth has become suspect. Of course it is correct that it has been much abused. Intolerance and cruelty have occurred in the name of truth. To that extent people are afraid when someone says, 'this is the truth' or even 'I have the truth.' We never have it; at best it has us. No one will dispute that one must be careful and cautious in claiming the truth. But simply to dismiss it as unattainable is really destructive. That destructiveness is what we can call 'The dictatorship of relativism.'"
Fitting under the description of "The dictatorship of relativism" is Bobby Sieber's statement of "There are no moral absolutes anymore, and we have become a nation that condones far too many deviant actions and immoral behaviors ... in today's world it's all about self and what is in it for me."
The cartoon strikes the Christian community, especially the Catholic community. There are those who pick and choose the Commandments they want to obey. They are called cafeteria Catholics and unfortunately they are politicians misrepresenting their religion and the people; Joe Biden, Kathleen Sebelius and Nancy Pelosi to name a few.
They pick and choose daily. They certainly don't pick the Tenth Commandment. "You shall not covet your neighbor's goods." They covert our money in taxes. In their disobedience to the first Commandment, "I am the Lord your God. You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve," they worship money and only serve themselves and worse yet is their disobedience of the Fifth Commandment. "You shall not kill" in their support of abortion.
