5 As I’ve said earlier, he has a strong record of opposition to Liberation Theology during his time as a bishop in South America. ...

Attributed to Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev:

 “Religion is the opiate of the people, so let’s give them opium.” 1959

Would you agree with the statement below?

Liberation Theology was invented by the KGB to subvert the Roman Catholic Church. Soviet agents were dispatched to Latin America to infect the church and spread it among the people. The doctrine asked the poor and downtrodden to revolt and form a Communist government, not in the name of Marx or Lenin, but in continuing the work of Jesus Christ, a revolutionary who opposed economic and social discrimination.

Yes, Central and South America were infected by Liberation Theology. One reason was Soviet-controlled Communist agents. Another was Latin America’s traditional tendency to keep falling into socialism. Another was the twisting of thee “Spirit of Vatican II.”

The Vatican finally realized what was happening and declared that the movement was heretical. So it was cut back. And Reagan also put a lot of pressure on during his time in office.

In any case, Liberation Theology continues to appeal to many South Americans. Pope Francis was one of the more important people who dedicated themselves to fighting it.
