Indeed. I was taught that the viewing or wake, or a memorial service, was the proper forum for pictures and timelines and sharing stories about the loved one. The purpose of the Mass was...well...the Mass.

The Cardinal Archbishop of Washington has repeatedly made clear to his priests that people who are publicly known to be in a situation of grave sin (i.e., pro-abortion politicians) are to be given Communion—in violation of Canon 915.
Why does the Cardinal refuse to defend the Eucharist from sacrilegious (and scandalous) reception? He has never given an answer, but one theory is that these pseudo-Catholics have worldly power and prestige.

I will share this article with my pastor.
Thanks Mr. O’Malley!

A Pastor friend of mine said he is always very cautious about his funeral sermon. To much “Happy go lucky, get to Heaven!” stuff and you miss the whole point of the service. To much “Sinners in the hands of an angry God” and you can leave the whole congregation in an uproar.
But he doesn't allow speakers, personal touches, etc during the funeral. At the viewing, or in the nave before the service is ok.

And it helps a family doing funeral arrangements when there is a ministry that ministers to bereaved families such as like my parish which has such a ministry.

The Novus Ordo funeral Mass rite IS FLAWED, at least as implemented. WHITE VESTMENTS teach that it is a celebration if not an outright canonization (actions speak louder than words.) The black vestments required in the Traditional Latin Mass funeral rite teach the opposite, prompting prayers of the faithful to shorten the deceased’s time of suffering in Purgatory.
