Sort of, I'm really talking about the political tactics and moral/ethical principles that Russia (Putin) used to justify and validate the invasion of Georgia, and the consequence that Syrian Christians would look to Russia for protection by citizenship rather than risk doublecross by the US.

Russia is far from perfect, but distrust of the US must be very serious in these long standing Christian communities.

The motivation for whatever we're doing in Syria is the Saudis wanting to build a gas pipeline to Europe through Syria, and they're perfectly willing to throw the Syrian Christians under the bus to do it. Putin, on the other hand, has declared an intention to protect Christians in the world.

Pretty easy choice, really.
