This morning, I read Dolan confirms error in Scalfari interview in the National Catholic Reporter....Dolan said, the sequence put on the popes lips by Scalfari is out of order.
"Francis did not hesitate before accepting his election, Dolan said, although there was a moment later when he paused in prayer before stepping out onto the balcony for the Habemus Papam announcement."
Okay, not such a big deal, right? Were still weathering this huge FRANCIS CRISIS, which is going to spell DOOM AND DISASTER for everybody and everything, and the SEA LEVELS WILL RISE and there will be GIRL CARDINALS, and puppy dog cardinals, and Benedicts name will be chiseled off all the walls, and the speaking of Latin will be punished with excommunication, and there will be dogs and cats living together, and so on.
Then theres this:
"Respected French Vatican writer Jean-Marie Guénois confirmed with Scalfari that he didnt tape the interview, nor did he take notes, so the text was an after-the-fact reconstruction."
....He didnt tape the interview. He didnt take notes.
....He didnt tape the interview. He didnt take notes.
....He didnt tape the interview. He didnt take notes.
Im just a teeny, two-bit, part-time writer on the very outer fringes of what could possibly be considered journalism, and even I know that this is outrageous. Insanely irresponsible. Something that should make people lose their jobs and all credibility forever. Holy shit. As my sister Devra Torres said, So were commenting on a bad translation of a hazy memory in the mind of a presumably heavily biased source. One more thing? Scalfari is 88 years old. But Im sure his memory is completely accurate.
So, I know this is a big deal. But not for one second do I think that the Francis haters will so much as bat an eye. Well get a shrug and a grimace, and theyll continue with their self-congratulatory dirge celebrating mourning this tragic decline of the papacy.
Why? Because Francis haters are like the prophets of climate change. No matter what happens, its just more evidence for what theyve been telling us all along. Got a hurricane? Expect to see more and more of this kind of thing, because climate change! One of the calmest hurricane seasons in the last 62 years/? Continue to panic! Because climate change! Polar ice caps melting? You see, thats climate change! Polar ice caps growing and getting icier? Have you not been listening???? This is classic climate change.
When youre completely wedded to the idea of anthropogenic climate change, bad news is bad news, and good news is bad news, too.
Same with the Francis haters. Absolutely anything you say about the man and about the demonstrable, incontrovertable good effects of his papacy its all just more evidence of bad news. They dont like what he says, and then they hear that he didnt actually say it, and the response is, Im tired of the excuses! Okay. So youre tired of the truth? Yeah, I thought so.
Even things that have nothing to do with him are magically attributed to his malign influence. And when we hear about oh, people becoming interested in the Church again . . . people asking their Catholic friends questions, because theyve heard theres something interesting going on in Rome . . . people considering joining RCIA, or getting their marriages regularized, or going to confession in droves . . . well, there you have it. Proof that Francisogenic Papal Change is ruining the Church. Because they are not the right kind of people, you see. Their hearts arent having the right kind of conversion. Their experience of the love and mercy of Christ isnt authentic enough. How can you be so blind? THIS IS A CRISIS, PEOPLE.
Because if its not a crisis, we might have to change how we look at the world.
Well, we shall see, wont we. If the climate really is changing, theres not a hell of a lot we can do about it. If Francis really is ushering in a new era, he is the Pope, and he calls the shots. So well see whats changing, and why, and how it all shakes out. Im putting my faith in the Holy Spirit. If youve been paying any attention at all, youll know that
"The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going."
The wind is blowing, and so far, it feels good.
So when Francis’ teleprompter makes statements on faith and morals, will it be considered infallible?
Well, doesn’t that open up a whole ‘nother can of worms?
Let's hope --- no, let's PRAY --- he has learned from this experience.
It's the inimitable Simcha Fisher.

Admin, is here some way we can get this pasted into the top of the thread? :o)
time will tell
Teleprompters don’t make statements, and I doubt Francis uses one, anyway.
Why are we surprised? Our lamestream media makes stuff up all the time, “fake but accurate” and all that.
Thank you, Admin!!
Have a pleasant, blessed Sunday.
I don’t think the intention was to give an interview. His Holiness wanted to talk to that atheist, Scalfari, informally. A tape recorder would have destroyed the very atmosphere of informality that apparently both parties wanted.
This in in line with this Pope’s personality in general: he doesn’t want a wall around himself, and doesn’t particularly care if people he reaches out to leave records.
So the author’s outrage about Scalfari’s journalistic practices is misplaced. We certainly have “wind blowing” and should expect more unscripted talk from His Holiness. Is that the proper outrage to have? So far I haven’t seen anything in the papal chats that deviated from the Catholic faith.
Very interesting observation. Thank you!
I would add that our obligation, — by “our” I mean every Catholic other than the Pope, — becomes to point out the catholicity of His Holiness’ remarks and correct the left-wing and other anti-Catholic distortions that inevitably will come. Wishing that the Pope had a different personality or different priorities can be fun, but like any fun it is not a productive use of our time.
Another good point.
More. Im just a teeny, two-bit, part-time internet guy on the very outer fringes of what could possibly be considered evangelizing the atheists, but even I would know enough to show up for a discussion about my faith without a tape recorder.
It’s never occurred to me to bring a tape recorder to any discussion!
You are the material popes are made of.
No, I’m a girl.
Many great things were made of girls.
Sailors, for example ... but not Popes!
How hard is it to have a Vatican camcorder record the interview in its entirety and post it to youtube? Perhaps several versions, each with subtitles in the major languages? With this being a condition for ANY reporter being granted an interview?
Why can't the Pope bypass the whole hostile press establishment by posting video sermons on the Vatican website?
Language sure has deteriorated.
