>> declaration that the church needs to shake off its obsession with abortion and homosexuality
if true — IF true — that would be heresy of the highest order.
good post
Thank you. Great post
It’s the end of everything as you know it, that’s for sure. Ten years from now the religious landscape will be so totally transformed that no one will recognize it. And no, neither the anti-Christ nor the Second Coming, and certainly not any silly notion of “Rapture” will have come to pass.
Make a mental note of what I just told you.
Heresy . . . or what?
May be I read something in his statement that you don't, because I don't see how it's heresy.
"I" thought he meant that Abortion and Homosexuality are wrong in the Catholic Religion, and that all the obsessing over whether to allow it or not is ridiculous.
Reuters and other news agencies are reporting that the Pope has capitulated on several issues such as homosexuality, abortion and contraception.Someone is several days late following the news. The Pope blasted abortion in a sermon; and he excommunicated an Australian priest who was gay-marriage friendly, female-priest friendly and reportedly gave the communion host to a dog. (Among other things I cannot recall immediately.)
>> May be I read something in his statement that you don’t
Actually, I haven’t read the statement in question at all (hence my emphasis on the word ‘IF’). And unless I missed it, Pope Francis’ statement wasn’t part of the original post.
Do you know the statement? If so, can you please furnish a link to it?
Thx
Oh... that happened a ways back. Only about 1 million people, worldwide, disappeared, and no one really noticed.
Welcome to hell.
I’m not Catholic, and 5 years ago would never have thought of defending a pope! That said, here is a link to the entire interview. A great interview. He is not saying abortion, etc. is “okay”. He is saying that it is not the only thing, and not the MAIN thing.
An excerpt from the excerpt below, which I think is at the heart of the statement:
“The proposal of the Gospel must be more simple, profound, radiant. It is from this proposition that the moral consequences then flow.”

Excerpt:
We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods. This is not possible. I have not spoken much about these things, and I was reprimanded for that. But when we speak about these issues, we have to talk about them in a context. The teaching of the church, for that matter, is clear and I am a son of the church, but it is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time.
The dogmatic and moral teachings of the church are not all equivalent. The churchs pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently. The dogmatic and moral teachings of the church are not all equivalent. The churchs pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently. Proclamation in a missionary style focuses on the essentials, on the necessary things: this is also what fascinates and attracts more, what makes the heart burn, as it did for the disciples at Emmaus. We have to find a new balance; otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel. The proposal of the Gospel must be more simple, profound, radiant. It is from this proposition that the moral consequences then flow.
I say this also thinking about the preaching and content of our preaching. A beautiful homily, a genuine sermon must begin with the first proclamation, with the proclamation of salvation. There is nothing more solid, deep and sure than this proclamation. Then you have to do catechesis. Then you can draw even a moral consequence. But the proclamation of the saving love of God comes before moral and religious imperatives. Today sometimes it seems that the opposite order is prevailing. The homily is the touchstone to measure the pastors proximity and ability to meet his people, because those who preach must recognize the heart of their community and must be able to see where the desire for God is lively and ardent. The message of the Gospel, therefore, is not to be reduced to some aspects that, although relevant, on their own do not show the heart of the message of Jesus Christ.
The mainstream media are not your friends when it comes to new of the Church. The moral law depends on the Love of God in Christ Jesus, who is the righteousness of God. If we spend a disproportionate amount of time talking about the moral law as it pertains to sex and secual behavior, we risk neglecting the preaching to the Love of God which is in Christ Jesus. Woe is me if I preach not the Gospel!
Pope Says Church Is Obsessed With Gays, Abortion and Birth Control
“Six months into his papacy, Pope Francis sent shock waves through the Roman Catholic church on Thursday with the publication of his remarks that the church had grown obsessed with abortion, gay marriage and contraception, and that he had chosen not to talk about those issues despite recriminations from critics. “
Thank you!
Thanks!
“Silly notion of Rapture”
You are worse off than I realized, Mr. Kopp. WOW!
