...sentimental pop music.
So, what does “sentimental” mean? And does the author know that “pop” is short for popular? And in their day, hymns were popular.
Hymns are revered because they are old. You know, kinda like old Dodge Chargers. But many of them suck, musically. And I am so tired of a miss translated verse being used over and over in so many of the hymns in my church. It is all the songs that use the word “mansion”.
Fact is, hymns are what are sentimental. People like them because they remind them of their youth in church. They are “the traditions of man”.
I believe that in the beginning organs were met with the same disdain as guitars are now. People just don’t like cultures other than their own.
Don’t get me wrong. A LOT of the new “pop” music in churches is pretty bad and not scriptural. And the repetitiveness of some songs can get annoying. But have you checked out the repetitiveness of a lot of hymns.
BTW, my current church uses only hymnals for worship service. Some of them have great and Christian lyrics. I’d like to use the words to create a completely new song.
Fact is, hymns are what are sentimental. People like them because they remind them of their youth in church. They are the traditions of man.
Applesauce!
Hymns stand the test of time for various reasons--some because they capture moods such as praise, sorrow, joy or hope, some because they offer commentary on Bible verses, theological themes, etc. And many have survived because they are, indeed, musically appealing.
