Pope Francis, in the first extensive interview of his six-month-old papacy, said that the Roman Catholic church had grown “obsessed” with preaching about abortion, gay marriage and contraception, and that he has chosen not to speak of those issues despite recriminations from some critics.
In remarkably blunt language, Francis sought to set a new tone for the church, saying it should be a “home for all” and not a “small chapel” focused on doctrine, orthodoxy and a limited agenda of moral teachings.
“It is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time,” the pope told the Rev. Antonio Spadaro, a fellow Jesuit and editor in chief of La Civiltà Cattolica, the Italian Jesuit journal whose content is routinely approved by the Vatican. “The dogmatic and moral teachings of the church are not all equivalent. The church’s pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently.

Well, ours does (Latin Mass Priest) and the majority of priests in this state were outspoken against the new marriage perversion law. In addition they regularly speak of pro-life issues. THIS IS WHAT THEY SHOULD BE DOING and I have to wonder if St. Malachy is going to make a resurgence with respect to this pope!

Yes, I was a little rough on Cardinal Ratzinger on another thread for some of his statements on Fatima but as pope, he did and does lead my church.

I can’t remember the last time I heard ANYTHING about homosexuals, contraception, or abortion from the Pulpit. It’s been many years, if not decades.
All I hear is ‘social justice’ and ‘fairness’ to the (illegal) immigrant and redistribution of wealth and how the nation’s ills are caused by ‘fat cats’ on Wall St. while giving no consideration to the corruption in government.
He must be referring to European churches.
Those who "promote" abortion and sodomy should be rebuked and put out of the church. This isn't a starting point but only after the person is shown the error of their ways. Politicians in the US particularly thumb their nose at church doctrine and they continue to "fellowship" even though they are living in darkness.

Regardless, the pope is speaking of how best to address these issues pastorally. The Church's position regarding the nature of abortion and sodomy remains unchanged. Catholics may disagree with the pope's pastoral opinions.“We have to find a new balance, otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel.”
Wow. I am not a Catholic, I am a Lutheran (LCMS). However, I must say this: The reason the catholic (universal) church is talking so much about homosexuality etc. is not because we are obsessed, it is because we must defend against heresies.
When Arius proposed his idea of the Trinity, Athanasius and others “OBSESSED” about the nature of the Trinity. Same for the two natures of Christ.
If Christians are obsessed with anything, it is with preserving the truth and fighting against falsehood.
The Roman Catholics are not obsessed with homosexuality, abortion, and contraception: its opponents are. The Catholics are just defending against it—constantly, because they are being attacked constantly.
It’s the same for all churches that believe that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God. We aren’t obsessed. The world is. We are just refuting the world.
By the way, my browser spell check suggested I replace Athanasius with “euthanasia.” Not quite, spell checker, not quite.
I know those kinds of homilies exist but I have never heard a single one of them. YMMV. Starting to think we are really, really blessed with this little Latin Mass here.
