The Thai telecommunications conglomerate True is getting rave reviews worldwide for its latest spot, "Giving," which tells the story of a man unexpectedly rewarded for a lifetime of good deeds he performed without expecting anything in return.

There are free clinics all over the USA where doctors freely volunteer their time and expertise to treat the indigent. And most of them are not run by the government, but by Christian and Jewish charities. But Obamacare is probably going to make them all illegal.

Very true, Ramius.

As I said elsewhere, I think all charity should be in the hands of individuals, families, and churches, churches, churches --- and nonprofits, philanthropies, fraternal groups, professional associations, community groups, trade organizations, foundations, and anybody other than the government.

The government has despoiled the Church of her proper role in society; and in doing so, has forced, lured, or seduced a huge class of human beings into a degrading state of perpetual dependency.

The evils that follow are almost intractable, unless one envisions the collapse of society itself as a cleansing episode. Our society has deep infection: infected to the bone.

But this video, I think, shows that people know the real deal when they see it: the real deal that comes from a compassionate heart.

Incredibly beautiful. Many times people have no idea how the good they do change lives. It was beautiful to watch the good come back to this man.

My understanding of the story was that the doctor who “wrote off” the bill in fact paid it out of his pocket.

Why?

He was the little thief whom the sick man rescued, paid for the medicines for the boy’s mother and sent him home with a bag of vegetable soup.

Read the subtitles: “All expenses paid for 30 years ago with three packs of painkiller and a bag of vegetable soup. Best regards, Dr. Prajak Arunthong”

This is a reflection of the Thai/Buddhist culture.

This is nonsense. The noodle shop owner should have handed his soup and money over to a government official. Then the pharmacy owner should have handed the medicine to the government official. Then the kids mom could have died while the government official tried to figure out what to do.

Yes, Bwana, you're right. I'm just saying that even if there were a somewhat more cynical or worldly explanation, that doesn't take away from the goodness at the heart of this video.

By the way, it's reportedly a true story. The framed pictures in the last few seconds of the video, show the real doctor.

Thanks!

I saw this earlier in an email. Like many other Thai / SE Asia commercials like it, they all make vision blurry.

Seen these?

I'm glad to hear you say that. There was a bit of a hot discussion elsewhere in the Religion Forum about whether it was even possible for non-Christian people to do a good deed, or to do anything pleasing to God.

Tagline is God's answer!

A hot discussion? Anyone arguing against it (the aforementioned possibility) is a complete moron.

39 posts and no one has said "Thailand?"

Now I'll go watch the video.
