Once again the media distorts comments. Celibacy is a discipline, not a teaching of the faith. Disciplinary law can be changed, but not de fide doctrine taught by Christ. Eastern-rite Catholic churches allow married priests, but the Latin rite has required celibacy since the eleventh century, although it was the norm before that. Occasional exceptions have been made in the case of married converts from protestant communities. There is nothing newsworthy here, except in the mind of the NYT.
