Note that Maraniss is not some third-rate hack but a highly credentialed author, biographer and editor. One has to conclude that in modern literary scene as accolades and sales pile up, the brain shrinks.

Maraniss certainly has no concept of what the Catholic Church, or Lombardi, was all about when it comes to the Catholic faith.
The author also seem to take license about Vince's wife, Marie, having a drinking problem. But to a person any Packer or friend of the Lombardis completely denied those accusations and found them repugnant.
