FULL TITLE: University of San Diego doesnt seem to be aware that abortion not consisent with the educational values of Catholicism
Last week, TFP Student Action published a piece, as well as a petition, regarding University of San Diego (USD), which is Catholic, if only in name, and the recognition of the pro-abortion group, Law Students for Reproductive Justice (LSRJ). As the piece mentions, USD has had issues in the past when it comes to being consistent with its Catholic identity, including on the abortion issue. The piece also mentions that LSRJ has had a pro-abortion presence on other campuses, including other ones which claim to be Catholic. It would seem then that this group not only endangers the lives of unborn children and their vulnerable mothers, but does so while disrupting the Catholic identity of where they set up shop.
Perhaps what is the most disturbing though, is that while LSRJ certainly has an agenda to promote, Catholic institutions which are true in their faith should know better. However, this is what John Ritchie, the author of this piece, had to say about what happened when he wrote to the university:
However, after I expressed my concern about the LSRJ clubs pro-abortion presence at the Catholic University of San Diego, I received a troubling reply from Dr. Timothy L. OMalley, vice-president of university relations. In short he attempted to justify the clubs existence: The fostering of legal expertise in all aspects of the law is consistent with the educational objectives of the USD School of Law, he wrote.
But the truth is this: abortion advocacy is never consistent with Catholic education.
Now, if this were coming from a non-Catholic university, it would be troubling and unfortunate, but we could brush it off as universities being liberal institutions, or some excuse like that. The University of San Diego is supposed to be Catholic though, and thus maintain Catholic teachings. Some may regard LSRJ as a group which involves fostering of legal expertise in all aspects of law, but if so, we expect such persons and institutions to be secular, and not of a faith which should promote and adhere to the Churchs teaching on life. Has Dr. Timothy L. OMalley forgotten that USD is Catholic? Has he forgotten that abortion is not consistent with the fundamental teachings of Catholicism? If either of these are true, then perhaps Dr. OMalley shouldnt be holding such a position. Maybe we cant really just blame him, though. Perhaps USD shouldnt be regarded as Catholic anymore if it keeps having integral identity issues with its faith. You dont have to be Catholic to be pro-life, but if youre Catholic and not pro-life, you dont have much justification or excuse.

The biggest scam in higher education is when Catholic parents spend $60,000/ year to send their kids to a Jesuit university to receive a “Catholic” education. Also “Catholic” law schools are an ongoing disgrace to the Church and should be closed.
While I don’t understand why tolerance has moved so high on the list of virtues I do know my middle daughter who finished her doctorate @ USD was not Catholic- was pro choice when she began there - but graduated with a strong pro life opinion
With pride I have since watched her undo the only other prochoice kid we have of our 5 children. he is now also pro life.
She was much more impressed w USD than UCSD where she did her undergraduate work - quoting her - “UCSD has no soul”
UCSD =Univ of Calif @ SD
It was in Catholic law school where my non Catholic daughter changed her opinion from pro choice to pro life.
We could question was it the school or our dinner table but she didn’t eat at home much in the 3 years she was in SD
Well bully for your family. However history will show that “Catholic” law schools have done almost nothing to lead the legal struggle against the carnage of “legal” abortion. When Cardinal O’Connor was fighting the good fight in NY against abortion in the 1980’s, the so called Catholic scholars and the Jesuits at Fordham gave him virtually no support. Instead they schmoozed with the likes of Koch and Cuomo to secure a Manhattan campus for their “Catholic” university.
In fact they were hostile to his efforts. The Jesuit order itself has devolved into an unspeakable lot in the US.
Catholic Universities across the land have opted out of the teachings of Jesus Christ and instilled the teachings of Marx and Lenin. Abortion is the sacrificing of a childs life in order to maintain a lifestyle!
I am a graduate of USD. I stopped financially supporting them two years ago when they went pro-gay in a big way. Now I just toss their solicitations into the garbage and delete their e-mails unread.
wrong way to do it.....make a negative comment on their solicitation and return it in their prepaid envelope...
