Per Torah, a day starts at sunset. With no sun, the first day had no start.My understanding is the first 5 1/2 days are not a part of the Jewish calender because time is described differently in those 5 1/2 days. I believe Rosh Hashana and the counting of time in the Jewish calender begins with Adam who God created on the 6th day.
