“Your Holiness, I want to be a priest of Christ, a representative of Christ,” de Brito whispered in the ear of Pope Francis July 26, after jumping hurdles and making his way to the Popemobile in his Brazilian national soccer team jersey.
“I am going to pray for you, but I ask you to pray for me,” Pope Francis responded, moved to tears and embracing him.
“As of today, your vocation is set.”
Onlookers noticed that de Brito did not want to leave the Holy Father. It was only after several attempts that the Pope's security entourage was able to take him off the Popemobile.
Once on the street, Nathan walked along side the Popemobile, waving to the Pontiff and blowing him kisses. One of the security guards stopped to console the boy before bringing him back to his waiting family.
I agree with you 100%. The truth is the truth, and trying to present it in a way that will please those who hate the truth is wasted effort. Just say the truth, and anyone who genuinely seeks after truth will be drawn to it.
We have full transcriptions of everything available with a click these days. Nobody has to give a blip’s worth of attention to what the Enemedia says.
I shouldn't have used the word "temper" a ways back; don't know why I did that. What I really intended to say is that the pope should have spoken perfectly clearly or not at all on the subject. And definitely should not try to appease anyone who might hear the remarks (not saying he did that).
O my most loving Father!
in the bitterness of the dolorous Passion of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, I now pour forth my complaint,
indignantly accusing myself that I have served Thee so unfaithfully during this day
and have offended Thee, my most amiable and loving Father, by so many and so great negligences.
I grieve for them from my inmost heart,
and strike my breast in the spirit of compunction,
and say unto Thee, O God! be merciful to me a sinner.
And for all the negligences whereby I have extinguished Thy good and gentle Spirit within me,
I offer Thee the sufferings and the tears of Thy beloved Son.
I beseech Thee, in union with His most availing prayers,
to grant me pardon of my sins, and to supply all my defects.
Deign to hear this, my prayer, through that love which held back Thine arm from taking vengeance,
when Thine only and most beloved Son, the object of Thine eternal and unspeakable complacency, was numbered with transgressors.
Amen.
- St. Gertrude the Great
I understand your point, but I just don’t believe one can be sufficiently clear so that those whose minds are clouded by sin can’t pretend to misunderstand.
These are people, after all, who proclaimed that the Church had abandoned its condemnation of contraception when Pope Benedict said that using condoms during homosexual prostitution activity didn’t make homosexual prostitution more sinful ... that in fact, a concern to avoid spreading disease was a positive sign of human decency, under the circumstances.
I think one either has to avoid the topic at all, thereby entirely conceding the issue, or simply accept that evil people will proclaim that you’ve said something very different from what you said.
And yes, they can twist “perfectly clearly” as well but at least the transcripts won’t be ambiguous.
Leaving to take the kids to VBS — Southern Baptist but all the churches seem to use the same commercial materials anyway.
I don’t think the pope should ever appear to “concede the issue” but he can simply make reference to an existing Catholic document which clearly explains the position of the Church.
Hope it’s fun! Our parish did the “Kingdom Rock” program this year. Elen was in the music group, Sally was youth staff, and Vlad was an actual participant.
Agreed, but it is better if the pope does not give them a "head start" by engaging in off-the-cuff Q&A sessions where imprecise and incomplete use of language is more common than not.
That is absolutely awesome. I’ve never seen that prayer before. Thank you!!
