The standard here in my State is if you reasonably believe your life or someone else's life to be in danger, you have the right to use deadly force to protect yourself or others. Being pinned to the ground by a 6-2 185 lb person and having your head beaten and slammed into concrete hard enough to split your head open - yeah, I'd call that reasonable fear for your life.
