Even before the jury read their verdict acquitting George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, a number of black religious leaders had responses at the ready.
The voices of white pastors and predominantly white churches and religious groups? Much harder to find.
Nearly a week later, some denominations that often weigh in on matters of national policy have yet to go on the public record. It's particularly notable in the leadership of the Catholic Church, the country's largest religious body.
Admittedly, the flood of responses from black religious leaders was a partly a function of where the TV cameras were pointed.
Familiar figures such as the Rev. Jesse Jackson hit Twitter moments after the verdict was released.
Less familiar figures, such as Pastor Michael McBride, head of the PICO Lifelines to Healing Campaign, immediately issued a call for peaceful demonstrations. McBride had also prepared a tool kit for "Hoodie Sundays" in honor of Martin before Saturday night's verdict.
The Rev. Raphael Warnock, senior pastor at the famed Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, preached a sermon about Martin's death on Sunday.
Others took longer to react.....

It is time to embrace being an "authentic white racist". If I'm going to be called a racist I may as well enjoy the experience. --Just don't tell my adopted minority son...
Even southern Baptist churches are cowardly on the race issue. The Southern Baptist Convention has had a black president for two terms now and dares not say anything negative about O’Bummer. Last year the convention publicly reprimanded Richard Land, a stalwart conservative leader on its staff, for saying politically incorrect things about the Trayvon Martin matter. Shameful.
See link below:
The implicit assumption of the CNN piece is that the verdict was unjust. Well, we followed the case, CNN, and the verdict was NOT unjust. Got it?
That article makes my blood boil. He criticizes race-baiters for stirring up emotions and exploiting the case, and is condemned for stirring up emotions.
The Southern Baptist Convention includes numerous predominately black churches. The trial was a civil matter, highly divisive the entire time. The correct outcome was reached from both a legal and a spiritual perspective, justice has been served as much as fallen mankind is capable. Therefore, silence upon the matter is the only appropriate course, particularly for the SBC.
I hope the Catholic Church is smart enough to stay out of the Zimmerman trial.
Either way they lose.
Stick to the Faith and leave this mess alone.
Why step in dog crap when you see it laying there in front of you.
Zimmerman was wrong, says Southern Baptist Convention official
Remember this same Convention is betraying all Americans by backing illegal alien amnesty...

You may be well-intended but you sound like a squishy liberal. As Christians we have an obligation to speak up about civil trials or “divisive” matters. Jesus was nothing if not divisive. We cannot stand idly by as sin is committed.
The correct outcome was reached in the trial. What is it that you’d have a church do in addition? What church is behaving correctly in your estimation, regarding the matter?
Because racism is not Christian, and there is no St Travon in white guys bibles.

Appalling. If we’ve lost the Southern Baptist Convention, what do we have left?
How would CNN know that churches are quiet about the matter, it is not like anyone at CNN actually go to church!
What church are you advocating, that meets your demands as far as this matter is concerned, heye2monn?
All I can see in your responses is agitation, your own and an attempt to sow it elsewhere. Justice has been served, imperfectly as is the nature of fallen mankind.
The beauty of the First Amendment is that it allows us to ignore other’s absurd rantings.
White churches, “Mommas don’t let your babies grow up to be thugs.”
I don't care about your sensibilities. This is your LEADERSHIP and they are traitors to America. What are you going to do about it? CHANGE them!
White churches, black churches, big churches, small churches, all God’s children have churches. The only commentary I would want to hear from a church is that anyone can follow the teachings of Christ, regardless of skin tone, or which one of Noah’s sons they descend from. They might repeat Christ’s message to sell their cloaks and buy swords, because the outside world is getting to be a very dangerous place for white people, Christians or otherwise, but black Christians would also be wise to arm themselves as this leftnut, cultural war escalates.
The only issue in the “white” or inclusive churches is the Christian morality of self defense what with “turn the other cheek.” For the black churches the issue is supposed by the anti religious Left to be tribal rather than Christian or Biblical. In the tribal view, a black man was killed by a white man, circumstances are not relevant, and Vengeane is required. Liberals view black peole and to a lesser extent Spanish speaking people as necessarily tribal and thus needing the protection of the messianic Left to get along in a non tribal world.
