Even before the jury read their verdict acquitting George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, a number of black religious leaders had responses at the ready.
The voices of white pastors and predominantly white churches and religious groups? Much harder to find.
Nearly a week later, some denominations that often weigh in on matters of national policy have yet to go on the public record. It's particularly notable in the leadership of the Catholic Church, the country's largest religious body.
Admittedly, the flood of responses from black religious leaders was a partly a function of where the TV cameras were pointed.
Familiar figures such as the Rev. Jesse Jackson hit Twitter moments after the verdict was released.
Less familiar figures, such as Pastor Michael McBride, head of the PICO Lifelines to Healing Campaign, immediately issued a call for peaceful demonstrations. McBride had also prepared a tool kit for "Hoodie Sundays" in honor of Martin before Saturday night's verdict.
The Rev. Raphael Warnock, senior pastor at the famed Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, preached a sermon about Martin's death on Sunday.
Others took longer to react.....

Anything a white says will be racial anyway.
These "black churches" are basically telling their "constituents" that the rule of law is what they say it is and not what is actually in our Constitution. They are anarchists pure and simple.
George Zimmerman is at least nominally Catholic, so I suspect if the Catholic Church is as tribal as the black community, they’d really rather that that church remain quiet about the matter.
... and it’s secret. They’re up to something. /s
its almost hilarious that , mr weiss, doesn’t mention synagogues.
Will you be having a “Justice for Tawana” moment tomorrow?
I think I'm going to puke.
I always have believed that the "elite" media detests evangelicals and Catholics. Those two faiths put it right out there and "scold" the evil doers (especially Hollyweird sluts and such). Thus they become anathema to the "elite" media and movie-world.
I ALWAYS figure that whatever the "elite" media say and whatever Hollyweird does, I DON'T say or do...and that's they way it's always been. I get VERY uncomfortable when I hear some talking head say something Christian and/or conservative. Gives me the creeps. Lol.
White churches have still not become mosques. Move, or we’ll *do* something.
Where, o where, is that WONderful vomit graphic? It’s a shame that NO graphics whatsoever are allowed. THAT one should be.
The Catholic Church strongly discourages homilies focused on politics or other current issues. Homilies must remain Christ focused.
If they had deviated, then it would have been notable.
It appears that the corrupt mainstream media ignores “white” churches on all issues and then has the audacity to accuse such churches of not speaking up about Zimmerman verdict.
Doy you mean like Father Phlager?
As a “white” church member, I am deeply saddened by death, it is sad to see the effects of sin on all of creation. I am deeply sad for the 50 million babies aborted, not to mention the black on black crime that kills so many within the community, is life so cheap?
The answer is that most white churches aren’t run by highly politicized race-baiters and morons and paranoid schizophrenics.
Zimmerman did what he had to do to defend himself. Martin shouldn’t have assaulted him.
