I read Blatty's The Exorcist about a year ago, finally. My understanding was that the actual case (the St. Louis boy) was never verified as a true possession and that most clerics and lay persons involved believed it to be more a psychopathy situation. Admittedly, I have not read the links provided yet (but plan to).

I read bout 3yr ago some book i forgot, but they
were trying to locate the boy and came to the conclusion
that there were false leads to throw off reporters etc.
There were supposed to be 3 copies of the journal.
One ea. copy to the family, diocese, ?Alexian brothers?
One journal was found during demolition of the hospital.
The only room in the building that was locked up, still
had everything left in place from ‘49. The contractor
saw the journal and knew what it was about.
Have not heard ,ever , that it was deemed psy problems.
Knew a guy who went to Rockhurst Univ.? in Missouri and
knew Fr. Bowdren .
BTW, 3 yrs ago - you could not find squat about the inside
dope on the exorcism. Something opened the flood gates recently i guess...
