There is/was some speculation that Siegel created Superman using his father as a model. His father was killed in 1932 in a store robbery, so a man who is indestructible to bullets, etc. would make sense there.

Furthermore, the first iteration (1932) of Superman was as an evil super genius, but was changed in 1933 to a good guy (after his father was killed). This makes sense to me.
