A friend of mine was showing a Southern Baptist neighbor around the Catholic Church. She explained the Stations of the Cross, the crucifix, the image of the Blessed Mother and the saints.
Then they came to the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Baptist was bemused.
“Why do y’all have a statue of Jesus with his heart on the outside?”
“Well,” said the Catholic lady sweetly, “You Baptists like to ask Jesus into your heart right?”
“That’s right.”
“We like to ask Jesus to take us into his heart.”
Perfect apologetics. Welcoming and kind and working from what the other person knows to what they have yet to discover.

The command was not to bow down and worship false idols. The Bronze serpent was acceptable UNTIL Israel began to treat it as a false god. Please keep in mind that words mean things and that the word idol means an image or other material object representing a deity to which religious worship is addressed. Regardless of how it may appear Catholics do not worship anyone or anything except the Trinity. Anyone that says other wise is lying or is trying to engage in mind reading which is against the forum rules.

The problem isn't necessarily that people were illiterate and the books were expensive. In those days, the Catholic church prohibited private individuals from even OWNING a copy of Scripture.You are absolutely correct, metmom.
The Catholic Church's hierarchy wanted to have strong and complete control over their followers which is why they did not want them to have scriptures to read. Heck, they might understand them and not have to buy salvation from the Church!
Yews because some of those copies were such poor translations (like "Yews", what's that translate to...*snerk*) that no one would want them.
John Wycliffe did a good job, and his translations were used for fuel to burn Hus at the stake.
You say "some" were poor translations and no one would want them (so what's the problem there?) so keep ALL scriptures from the people? What ever works to keep the masses ignorant of the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

I did not “snerk” you, please re-read my post. As I said I presented you the truth, you have made your choice.
Notice how God says not to use the way of the pagans to serve Him? Even the RCC itself says they have incorporated pagan practices into their “religion”.

But the Church from a very early period took them into her service, just as she adopted many other things indifferent in themselves, which seemed proper to enhance the splendor of religious ceremonial. The RCC will, just as Israel did, experience the wrath of God for disobeying His word. The admonition in Revelation to “come out of her my people” is for those who truly want to listen to God.

CB I am pinging A more perfect union in on this. I am going to sit back with a bowl of popcorn and let the two of you settle this. I mean if it is bad for the Catholics how much worse is it for protestants to do the exact same thing (Plus snake handling, Homosexual marriages, and priestesses).
The problem any Catholic would have is that Moses made the bronze serpent at GOD'S command. It wasn't Moses' idea. It wasn't something the Israelites used or incorporated in their worship that God later approved. Read and learn. God commanded Moses to make that serpent and the people didn't bow down to it or serve it. They merely had to look at it.
Numbers 21:7-9 7 And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. I’m sure you are right in the majority of cases... but to claim that all Catholics do not worship icons, statues, bones, etc. would require you to be a mind-reader also. Based on what one can observe from the outside only, I often see things that indeed look like worship. Is it? I leave it to God.

Viewing art and worshipping, “adoring”, kissing, etc. are two vastly different things. I’ve yet to see a Protestant bow before artwork, kiss it, etc. In other words, they do not “do the exact same thing”.
I can only assume that (perhaps) you believe all Protestants are identical? Only the Anglicans (designed as Catholicism Lite) have priests that I know about. The rest of Protestants have nothing similar that I know about. So I will leave them to the side. Of course there are Protestant groups that support homos - just read Revelation and you will see Christ is perfectly capable of removing their lampstand. We just separate from the cancer here on earth. He will take care of those groups.
By the way, I may be wrong, but the only snake handlers that exist are back in the mountains. Maybe you have a few hundred? At least they have one passage of scripture to support their practice...
