The Irish conflict is an ethnic one, which has been portrayed as religious by the media. The battle is between the native Irish, and the Scots-Irish who the Brits imported from Scotland.
It doesn’t matter what sort of conflict it is or was, there were people who became involved in helping whichever side they were on through their church due to an appeal made on religious grounds.
