Lucifer, unable to accept that the Son of God would have the fully human nature of a lesser being and whose mother (Mary) would become the Queen of all angels rebelled and was cast down. God them promised that Mary would be the one to crush the serpent's head. Exorcists will tell you that it is Mary whom demons fear most.
The irony is that those who have accepted Satan's promise of being able to determine for themselves what is right and wrong, what is true and not true without dying are the same ones who share Satan's pride based rejection of Mary as the Theotokos and Queen of Heaven.
