Rick Warren’s Son Commits Suicide

ick Warren’s son has taken his own life. Matthew Warren, 27, had struggled with mental illness before his death.

Evangelist Greg Laurie posted an e-mail the Saddleback Church pastor sent to this staff: “Only those closest knew that he (Matthew) struggled from birth with mental illness, dark holes of depression, and even suicidal thoughts. In spite of America’s best doctors, meds, counselors, and prayers for healing, the torture of mental illness never subsided. Today, after a fun evening together with Kay and me, in a momentary wave of despair at his home, he took his life.” Click here to read a prayer request Rick Warren e-mailed to his staff.

Prayers and condolences are flooding into Warren’s Facebook page. And Laurie also expressed his heartfelt pain over Warren’s loss.

“chemical imbalance” sells a lot of little pills for the Big Pharma, but it’s not necessarily the cause of depression by defecating teenage daughters. And the Big Pharma along with the Psychology Industry have made certain it is an article of faith among the uncultured, gullible public. When I went out an hour ago and bought a jar of gefelte fish on sale at the supermarket, that was c aused by a chemical reaction in the brain, true. But if mental health is a “chemical imbalance” then everything we do and think is as well. Chemical imbalance happens when an illegal immigrant factory worker pees into a batch of tabasco sauce as a revenge against la migra!

If you knew about Rick’s teaching you would know who he is- also where in the statement did he talk about Jesus?

I know how to read.

The Bible says to judge what is wrong... and false teachings. If that offends you, that is about you, not me.

I never said that it was not sad. We can pray all we want for atheists and feel terrible about it, but that isn’t going to save them.

I do know that suicide touches every member of the family and can’t help but wonder if they did not see any warning signs.

I heard on the news that this son has suffered from depression for years and has previously tried suicide. In most cases, and especially this one, if a chronically-suicidal person makes up his mind to do it, there is NOTHING anyone can do to stop it. Eventually, he will be successful. It is heart-wrenching for family members and friends who try to help but cannot.

Public speculation that comes anywhere close to insinuating that someone could/should have "seen the warning signs so they could stop it" are extremely hurtful to this man's family, as well as anyone reading it who is a suicide survivor (family member/friend).

Just so you know.

Prayer is great, but God doesn’t rule by democracy- and he doesn’t answer the prayers of people who don’t follow Him.

He isn’t an ATM.

We are all sinners..and if we make the effort to follow Christ, Christ has mercy and His grace will help us to make the changes we need to make.

A lot of times people who do these “Fox hole” prayers , eventually come around and are pulled—attracted to the Christian way.

But that abuse is part of the problem; it leads to self hatred, which leads to so-called autoimmune diseases, which are healed by confessing that self hatred and it’s cause.

OK; now we're getting somewhere. Earlier you posted that it might take some people a long time. So what if someone kills him or herself before the lengthy time required for healing their individual sin is enough to keep them from accomplishing it on earth? Would God condemn their soul? I just don't think it's necessarily so, and I'm speaking as one who has experienced four friends who took this route. Trust me when I tell you, I have been over and over these deaths and the spiritual issues again and again for decades.

Yes, God and surrender to faith can heal. But no, we just can't say that the person who wasn't "done yet" when he took his/her life to end the pain has utterly failed spiritually; or that this is a black-and-white matter like a light switch.

Judgment is mine, saith the Lord.

This is what FR has become. It was always like that a little bit, but no more than you see it in the general population.

Ain't it the sad truth. Good thing he wasn't a *gasp* Mormon! Then they'd really be crawling out of the woodwork.

Oh exactly- I agree. We are told to expect that we will be brought to our knees and cry out to God. I agree.

But the people who mouth prayers- and pay no respect to the teachings of Jesus, are simply paying lip service.

Rick Warren, for example, can pray for whatever he wants to pray for- but those prayers are going to fall flat.

Know why?

Because he blasphemes the Lord all of the time- while he spreads false hope and teachings and reaps huge praise and benefits.

The Lord is not mocked.

And I pray Rick Warren repents and falls to his knees and cries out- to the Lord and repents and turns toward God.

And God will hear him and forgive him. No doubt. But he has to take the steps everyone else has to take.

I am not going to lie about it.

I firmly believe that illnesses can benefit from BOTH medical help AND prayer.

A big hearty AMEN to that!

I am so not a fan of rick Warren...I have my suspicians when people make a lot of money on preaching...not all of them...but his Media Ego was so over the top.

having said that, maybe God uses people in a way that I can’t fathom...so I try to leave it up to God (even though I do rant on about it.ha)

Well, aren't you special. I know very well who Rick is and have not been impressed by his dog-and-pony show; but it's when God hits us with the two-by-four across the haid that most of us finally give in --so why pile on when the man is as low as a parent can be? It might be the way for him to finally surrender the last vestiges of pride and sin.

As for your witness, try compassion; it feels better for both the giver and the receiver. Without it, you can hardly expect someone to judge you "salt and light." Salt, maybe; but where's your light of mercy?

“I heard on the news that this son has suffered from depression for years and has previously tried suicide”

The more a person tries the chances are they will become successful at committing suicide. I want to say this family should have been more on guard but that is more easily said than done.

LOL! I refuse to enter a Mormon war thread. Ever!

Speaking of that... is there any way to make religious threads be blocked from appearing on your Latest Posts page? It's annoying just having to read the titles sometimes.

I really don’t know who Rick is so would someone give me the background on him? I have noticed several FReepers weight in a dislike for him as a preacher. What exactly is the deal? Thanks.

This story just goes to show once again, you can't be born a Christian. You must be born again. We have no idea what was really going on with any of these people, but God knows. And He will comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
