When you chew your finger nails, you should do them one at a time.

I usually cut back on caffeine, especially around bed time.

"However, you can't say the same about bowing before a statue."

Religious art has a different significance than with secularist or Protestant teachings. Catholicism embraces the concept that religious art, whether sculpture or paintings, is a tool that both focuses the mind and effectively offers a window or portal for our minds into heaven. They are no more important than a pane of glass through which we are looking. Bowing simply shows proper respect and deference. The traditions of bowing, kneeling, or prostrating arose from the postures and gestures of respect demanded by royalty. The Church taught that if we displayed those postures and gestures to humans and human symbols like flags, how much more deserving should symbols of God be.

It should be noted that Protestants often display their own gestures and traditions of respect. I have seen Protestants brought to tears by locations in the Holy land. I have seen Protestants show similar respect to the Bible both in attitude and in their insistence that the "B" in Bible be capitalized. I have even seen some bow to and kiss the Bible (As is done in the Catholic Mass). In the end our differences are more cultural than than theological. We both love the same God.

Peace be with you

I’m also certain that she’s not worshiping (or venerating) her bed.

I don't wish to sound argumentative but we're not talking about people buying statues of Mary as "religious art". They don't sit them in their houses or car dashboards as decorative pieces. Please note this advertisement from "The Catholic Company".

Something that invites "prayer and petitions" of someone else is really what God knew would happen if we turn our attention away from Him. People prayed to the temple, the ark, the gold of the temple, etc. It would be a lot simplier if people would just ask Him. Really, He's not that busy.

You won't see me kissing the bible simply because I know where it's been. As for treating it with respect, well, I'm guilty of that but only because it cost me $79.95.

Credo in Deum Patrem omnipotentem;
Creatorem caeli et terrae.

Et in Jesum Christum,
Filium eius unicum, Dominum nostrum;
qui conceptus est
de Spiritu Sancto,
natus ex Maria virgine;
passus sub Pontio Pilato,
crucifixus, mortuus, et sepultus;
descendit ad inferos;
tertia die resurrexit a mortuis;
ascendit ad caelos;
sedet ad dexteram Dei Patris omnipotentis;
inde venturus est
iudicare vivos et mortuos.

Credo in Spiritum Sanctum;
sanctam ecclesiam catholicam;
sanctorum communionem;
remissionem peccatorum;
carnis resurrectionem;
vitam aeternam. Amen.

In English:

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ,
his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived
by the power of the Holy Spirit,
and born of the Virgin Mary,
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
he will come again
to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen

Like just about every other religious artifacts, people worship those things rather than worshiping God. That is why God forbids us doing so. It isn't for His benefit but for ours.

We worship them as much as you guys worship beds.

I tend to pray laying down. Much more comfortable. Or I also pray when I go out on walks. My knees hurt too much and it takes away from the prayer time since it divides my attention.

The little girl is a catholic whose holy statue got stolen, so she is praying to her bed for its safe return.

Looks like she is praying to her bunny.

"Something that invites "prayer and petitions" of someone else is really what God knew would happen if we turn our attention away from Him."

I am not implying that there are not errant or superstitious Catholics only that Catholic teaching differentiates between prayer and worship. In English to pray means to ask and that is how it is used within Catholic teaching. We ask saints, whom we believe are still alive, to intercede and pray for us.

As Pope John Paul II explained Marian devotions, Catholics ask the Blessed Mother to help guide and form the Christ in us as God asked Her to do with His Son. I don't expect you to accept this because I do not expect you to understand it. "Therefore do not seek to understand in order to believe, but believe that thou mayest understand." - St. Anselm

Peace be with you

"Get lost, please."

The Holy Spirit has given you an opportunity. The New Evangelizations begs that you do not drive those who do do not see further into darkness, but bring them into the light. Do not assume that they love God less than you. No one possesses the capacity to fully know and understand an infinite God.

Peace be with you
