In your transcript it says pitiful NGO, but in the press version it said compassionate NGO.

Actually, the true meaning of "pitiful" is exactly that: full of pity, ie, compassionate.

The correct word for what most people mean when they say "pitiful" is "pitiable."

  2. Arousing contemptuous pity, as through ineptitude or inadequacy. See Synonyms at pathetic.
  3. Archaic Filled with pity or compassion.

From http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/pitiful I would have to see the original Latin or Italian, but I wouldn't assume the Pope would go with the archaic meaning.
