Also in regards to the Jesuits, there were also Jesuit martyrs on the North American continent, which includes St. Issac Jorges and a number of others, upper state NY and Canada.
Father Pierre De Smet (spelling correct?)was also a Jesuit. He was a Belgian priest/missionary, who traveled over the region where the states: North Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, Montana are now, back in early-to-mid 19th Century! He traveled there over the Oregon/Emigrant Trail.
He also knew many, and was friends to many mountain men/explorers/trappers/Indian leaders. Three of those, for example: Miles Goodyear, Jim Bridger, and Indian leader Sitting Bull! He was also known among early Mormon immigrants. He was friendly with them, and they were friendly with him!
