A crowd of Catholic faithful gathered Feb. 28 outside the papal vacation spot. At 8 p.m. Roman time, a loud bell rang eight times as they shouted “Viva il Papa!” or “Long live the Pope!”
The Swiss Guards entered Castel Gandolfo and hung up their ceremonial weapons – called halberds – on the inner walls as there is no longer a sitting Pope for them to protect.
Vatican gendarmes dressed in black uniforms have relieved the guards. The doors of Castel Gandolfo have been sealed, symbolizing the vacancy of the See of Peter and the lights of the papal residence in Vatican City are dark.
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has exchanged his red papal shoes for simple brown ones given to him on his recent trip to Leon in Mexico. He now wears a simple white cassock without the mozzetta – the short cape that covers his shoulders.
Benedict XVI traveled to Castel Gandolfo by helicopter and car two hours before his resignation took effect. Hundreds of Catholic faithful greeted his arrival to hear his final words as pontiff.
“I’m simply a pilgrim that is starting the last stage of his pilgrimage on Earth,” he remarked, “but I would still like with my heart, with my love, with my prayer, with my reflection, with all my inner strength to work for the common good of the Church and of humanity, and I feel very supported by your sympathy.”
“Let’s go ahead together with the Lord for the good of the Church and of the world,” he said before making his final apostolic blessing.
“Thank you and good night. Thanks to all of you,” Pope Benedict said before departing from the Castel Gandolfo balcony.
Now that he has resigned, the former Pope will live at Castel Gandolfo for two months before moving to a monastery inside Vatican City. In the upcoming days, 115 cardinals will gather at the Vatican to elect his successor.
Seems like that is the way God set it up.
It's your faith the puts Catholic doctrine on a higher more holy level than the Bible.
And apparently teaches to discount the Holy Spirit and depend on "Church" teachings only as one Catholic here has stressed most emphatically.
Can a river rise higher than its own source?
If a lie is repeated over and over again will a great multitude believe it and indeed swallow the camel?
Now this really stuck out:
I will say though that the Bible is more an authority on Christianity than the Catholic church.Again preaching that the Christianity has as it's source Catholism. Would that the source of inspiration for that org be Jesus instead of the seen the other way around. Can a river rise higher than its own source?
I'm aware of the existence of what you posted.
Except for the use of Asparagus, that's new to me. (makes me think you may be a teacher in some institution)
I realize that all of that has to be believed in order to substantiate the existence of the Catholic belief system and all it entails.
But it is such a stretch from old and new testaments teachings in context that I had to reject it for Biblical (not Bible only) Christianity years ago.
Peter was a great apostle and follower of Jesus but he is not the cornerstone of the church that Jesus brought into existence in the first century. His church is built upon Himself (the Rock of scriptures consistantly) not a man.
Lately I am being reminded of straining at a gnat and swallowing a Camel. Mission accomplished it seems to some degree with concepts such as you expressed above.
We will see what happens when the next Pope appears on the scene.
You are Cephas and on this Cephas, I will build my church. Are you claiming that Jesus pointed to himself and called himself Cephas?
But it is such a stretch from old and new testaments teachings in context that I had to reject it for Biblical (not Bible only) Christianity years ago.
You have excluded 'Bible only' .. so you accept Tradition?
Golly. I’m glad I’m not terribly curious about such a close minded group.
Thanks for the (polite, helpful) answer. :)
The antics of the German heretic Luther and his buddy Henry the VIII 500 years ago have given us this:
Evil abounds in the "churches" that have broken from Rome.
“It’s your faith the puts Catholic doctrine on a higher more holy level than the Bible.”
This is a common misunderstanding. The Catholic church teaches thusly:
http://www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p1s1c2a2.htm
paragraph 82
“As a result the Church, to whom the transmission and interpretation of Revelation is entrusted, “does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone. Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honored with EQUAL sentiments of devotion and reverence.”
“Again preaching that the Christianity has as it’s source Catholism. Would that the source of inspiration for that org be Jesus instead of the seen the other way around.”
When did the first bible appear and when was it written?
"It's your faith the puts Catholic doctrine on a higher more holy level than the Bible."Tradition on the same level as God breathed God inspired Holy scripture? Not from God, but from the emanations of man. This is a common misunderstanding. The Catholic church teaches thusly:
"Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honored with EQUAL sentiments of devotion and reverence."
Still, some Catholics say the Catholic traditions are more important to the Catholic than scripture [thus the "common misunderstanding"], you statement not withstanding.
"Again preaching that the Christianity has as it's source Catholicism. Would that the source of inspiration for that org be Jesus instead of the seen the other way around."It really doesn't matter, but it was written over centuries starting with Moses. [to continue debating who put the Bible together has been done many times here at FR, it's turned into beating a dead horse]When did the first bible appear and when was it written?
The important thing is that Christianity has it's source as Jesus, not Catholicism.
And certainly NOT Catholicism being the source of Christianity.
There are different rocks, parts of rocks, pebbles, small rocks and big rocks.
Jesus/God is referred to as a/the Rock many times and it is EXCLUSIVE to Him as the main Rock of scripture.
Jesus has a way with words but sometimes they can be misuderstood.
There are numerous scriptures showing that God is THE ROCK, and it is God who is the Rock upon which Jesus built His church.
Isaiah 44:8 "Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one."There are many more.
Deuteronomy 32:4-- He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.
Deuteronomy 32:15 Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; filled with food, he became heavy and sleek. He abandoned the God who made him and rejected the Rock his Savior.
Jesus was talking to Peter (who btw was already named that) and mentioned that, but the Rock on which He built his Church was The Rock, God. Jesus.
As far as Peter being a "Pope," there were no popes back then, so Peter was not seen as the "Pope."
Hey, that looks like a portrait of Martin Luther on the Papal Ring!
