There are Roman Catholics and Greek Catholics and Russian Catholics, etc. ~ they are typified by having a religious hierarchy which is separate from the laity, and which provides a liturgical form of worship. In short, Catholics are Catholics are Catholics. Protestants are typically NOT Catholics, but they aren't Buddhists or Hindus either. They may or may not have a liturgical form of worship.

Russians/Greeks/etc. are Catholics in the sense of the Orthodox Church being officially "the Orthodox Catholic Church," but Eastern Orthodoxy is a separate church and religion from the Catholic Church in Rome. There are Vatican-affiliated Catholic churches among these Orthodox peoples but they are in the minority and traditionally disliked by their Orthodox neighbors for being "uniates."

How can someone who knows so much about Lapland and Santa Claus not know this?

Real Simple, I know something of history and i've actually attended services of all the churches you name ~ and they are all Christian churches. For some folks "catholic" means "universal" ~ so, how can you be so critical of semantic differentials ~ these folks can all call themselves whatever they want, or whatever they think Jesus or the Apostles suggested they call themselves ~

BTW, Orthodox Christianity and Roman Catholicism are NOT different religions! Islam is a different religion, but they are the same religion. The disputes are ecclesiastical.

BTW, Santa Claus is a totally different subject, and unless you want to start discussing Thor, Odin, Little Red Man, Herb Woman, reindeer and the 4 household goddesses ~ and maybe an origin story or two that diverges substantially from the two in the Bible, you probably shouldn't raise it on this thread.

Regarding "Lapland", that's a European invention. It's more properly 'the sapma or sapmai' ~ virtually all the original peoples of the Sapma are, in fact, Lutherans or Russian Orthodox ~ in name. It gets very complex after stating that so we'll leave it at that.
