The word is subject to many until competent authority decides which are allowed. Someone has to choose.

EXACTLY!!!!

'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone,
' it means just what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less.'

'The question is,' said Alice, 'whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master - that's all.'

That sentence does not say that.

Yes; it does.

To say ANYthing else would be to claim that JOSEPH was 'celibate'; too.

Every text demands an interpreter.

No; it doesn't.

Why can't you pew warmers just READ the 'text' and quit stuffing it through a grinder?

You assert that it is self-evidently clear, that it implies that the Marian doctrines are wrong.

I implied nothing. I stated a case.

I rest my case.

But you've PROVED nothing.

Sorry that you can’t go tell Pastor Bubba Bob that you couldn’t convince this Catholic.

I can't save ALL the starfish; but perhaps I can save just one.

Ya got me!

But it's really not an unknown thing to most rational folks over the age of puberty.

But it works both ways:

He DIDN'T have INTERCOURSE with Mary!

But it works both ways:

Not really. Cattholics aren't slaves to Sola Scriptura and can use other sources.

Elsie:

Actually I have, Catholics and Eastern Orthodox have the same NT as all the various Protestant groups/sects, of course it was the Catholic Church and its Councils that canonized the NT, and all read the same said NT, yet on many major important doctrines, there are divergent views, and again, all read the same NT with the same 27 books.

I don’t need to prove anything, the empirical evidence supports my position, not yours. have a good day at the First something church in yahooville with Pastor Bubba Bob or Jim Bob, or Cooter or Hee Haw Jones.

But your 'evidence' consists of quotes from a bunch of dudes who are agreeing with each other about something that has NOT been produced as EVIDENCE!

Oh...

Cooter said "HI!"

That is what the tradition says. To assert that Joseph went on to have a mess of kids after Jesus, is to assert that Joseph took the events described in Matthew and Luke rather lightly.,hat he accepted that the child was of mysterious origins, but not that Jesus was the Son of God in the same sense that the evangelists did.

You may not be aware you have your own filter. Even if you read the original Greek, you stand in time a long away from the day when Koine was still a live language. Drop a modern in the First Century, and no matter how fluent he may be in the languages of the land , he will have a hard time making himself understood. The smells alone would knock him over, and if he stayed more than a week, the micro-organisms and viruses, would have him flat on his back, probably dying of dysentery if he ate and drank anything. Furthermore even if we chosen to send him to, say. 27 A.D. to the outskirts of Capernaum, so uncertain is the chronology of the Gospels that he would have a hard time encountering Jesus and his disciples.

roamer_1:

My points were made in numerous threads, so that statment was not part of an argument, it is a conjecture, but not 100%, of the type of person that makes the Fundalmentalist argumnets that were made. I was in graduate School, a long time ago, in a part of the Country were that philosophy and theology was common place and the descriptions that I used were in fact accurate in many cases, maybe not elsie, and for the record, I never referred to her/him in that fashion.

Still, in many parts of the U.S., that culture and mindset is commonplace, you would think Christiantiy started in the Rural South of the United States according to these people and St. Paul wrote and talked in King James English. Trust me, I have lived in those types of places and they do exist.

BULL!

It "SAYS" that he took his job as HUSBAND and surrogate father as being the PROPER thing to do.

YOU Romans have EMASCULATED the poor man!

Well, let us assume that that if the good Lord had wished to enter the world as all the rest of us have, Joseph would have been his natural father. Instead, we have the Virgin Birth, which was not an ambiguous sign, so far as Mary was concerned, but an opening of the very heavens, and and overshadowing of her by the glory of God. Joseph did not experience this, but he did experience some stunning moments, not only his dreams but the witness of the shepherds and the appearance of the magi with their gifts. He must have understood that Mary was a “queen” far more than Sarah ever way, and that her son was, far more than Issac, the fulfillment of the Promise. Is he made less than a lesser man for deciding that he must be a true consort and champion , and no longer an ordinary man expecting only an ordinary life. When he said yes to the angel and agreed not to abandon Mary and her child, he took up a task greater than ever assumed by the greatest warrior in history.

The Protestant conceit is that you can read Scripture with the same clarity that Joseph Smith claimed to have read the scrolls he unearthed. You have no magical spectacles you can use to get into the minds of hearts of the authors of the Scriptures, and allow you to dismissed the trail of evidence, sometimes clear sometimes faint, that leads back to First Century Israel.

Riiight. So the South (and maybe the West where I am from) are exceptions which prove the rule of such an attitude as you have seemed to display... Gotcha. Hicks elsewhere are not quite as hick-ish as those of us who live in 'those types of places'... Do I have that right?

Yes.

Your church has neutered him.
