I’d be really surprised if you can catch any undercurrent of preaching gay marriage at the viewer

That's just the point. If their agenda were obvious, everyone would notice, warning flags would go up, people would discuss and debate the question. (If Hollywood could achieve its aims that way, there would be fewer sitcoms and more televised debates.)

But when the subject of "two men raising a boy" comes up in the context of fag adoption, the image of this "family" crops up in the back of your mind as probably the only example you've ever known.

We all draw heavily on our experiences. The subtle and powerful influence of cinema (movies, TV, etc.) is in planting faux experiences in our memories and emotions.

You’re killing an ant with a hammer - the storyline is that the boy lives with his mother and stepfather and spends the weekends with his father, who lives with his brother.

The ‘boy’ is in the military in the current series. There’s no homosexuality involved. Put that hammer down.
