I remember a drive home from college where I was discussing an issue with my father. In the course of the discussion he said something that crossed my idea of who God was. I could not accept what he was saying and argued with him. He showed me many verses but I continued to reject what he was trying to teach me. Finally he asked ‘Son, when are you going to let the Bible say what the Bible says?’ It was like I got hit between the eyes and immediately the resistance disappeared. I responded with ‘ok, I get it’. He thought I was being sarcastic (I was a teenager after all) and he was pressing the point when I said ‘Dad, really, I get it now.’ It was the single most significant moment of my life to date. People do not want to come to God on his terms.

As I like to tell people who have that reticence: "There's your trouble..."
